Insulation is almost entirely air held in place, which is what makes it work and what makes it a transport problem. A vehicle carrying a loft insulation order is full long before it is heavy, and quoting it on weight produces a vehicle half the size of the one needed.

Why is insulation quoted on volume?
Because it fills space and weighs almost nothing. A pack of loft roll occupies a substantial part of a van and weighs a few kilograms; a 7.5-tonne vehicle full of mineral wool is nowhere near its payload.

The practical consequence is that a quote based on a weight estimate will specify a vehicle that cannot hold the order, and the correction happens at loading rather than at booking.
What happens if insulation gets wet?
Mineral wool loses thermal performance while it is wet and can slump permanently; PIR and phenolic boards delaminate at the facing where water gets between the foil and the foam.
Neither failure is dramatic at the point of delivery. A damp pack of loft roll looks like a damp pack of loft roll, gets installed, and the building underperforms for its life. A PIR board with a lifted facing is more visible but frequently installed anyway.
That makes covered transport a genuine requirement rather than good practice, and it makes the delivery point matter. Insulation left on a driveway or in an open site compound in the rain is insulation that should not be installed, and somebody has to decide that rather than nobody noticing.
How are PIR boards handled?
Flat, supported, and with nothing on the corners. PIR is rigid but the foam crushes and the foil facing tears, and a crushed corner is a gap in the insulation line once installed.
Boards travel in their manufacturer packs where possible, because the packaging is doing real work. Loose boards slide, and a sliding board takes the facing off the one beneath it. On a mixed load they go on top, never underneath fixings or dense products.
Board thickness also drives volume disproportionately. A pallet of 25 mm PIR and a pallet of 150 mm PIR have the same footprint and completely different heights, and a load quoted on sheet count without thickness is a load that does not fit.
Can you deliver to retrofit and domestic installations?
Yes, and retrofit is a growing share of this work. Government-backed retrofit programmes put insulation into occupied homes, which is a different delivery from a builders merchant round.
The constraints are domestic ones: no loading bay, parking on a street, a householder who has to be in, and material that has to go somewhere dry and out of the way until the installer arrives. A loft insulation order for a terraced house is bulky enough to fill a hallway.

Is insulation a fire risk in transit?
The products themselves are not classified dangerous goods, but combustibility varies enormously between materials and it is worth knowing what is on the vehicle.
Mineral wool is non-combustible; rigid foam boards are organic and behave differently in fire. That matters more for storage and for the building than for a road journey, but a full load of foam board is a different proposition from a full load of stone wool, and site storage rules sometimes reflect that.

Do you handle site phasing?
Yes, and it matters more here than in most trades because insulation takes so much space. Delivering a building's full insulation package at once fills the site and guarantees damage.
Phased delivery by floor, plot or zone keeps material in its packs until it is installed, reduces the area a contractor has to keep dry, and cuts the double-handling that turns a clean pack into a damaged one. On a housing development that means plot-level delivery rather than a compound drop.

Can you collect packaging and offcuts?
Yes. Insulation generates a striking amount of packaging — polythene wrap, banding and pallets — and offcuts that are bulky rather than heavy.
On a domestic retrofit that waste has nowhere to go: no skip, a householder who did not agree to keep it, and an installer with a van already full of tools. Collecting it on the next delivery visit is the practical answer and costs very little on a routed round.

Does the season affect availability?
Yes, sharply. Insulation demand rises through autumn as heating costs return to attention and retrofit programmes push work before winter, and capacity across the whole supply chain tightens with it.
The pattern is predictable and still catches people out. A contractor with a retrofit programme running to a funding deadline competes for vehicles with every other contractor doing the same thing, and vehicles go to those who booked.
Merchants and installers who plan delivery capacity alongside their material orders fare better than those arranging transport when the stock arrives — which is the same lesson as spring in the nursery trade, for the same reason.
Do you handle acoustic and fire-rated products?
Yes, and they are denser than thermal insulation, which changes the load calculation. Acoustic slab and fire-rated mineral wool are noticeably heavier per cubic metre than loft roll.
That matters because a load mixing thermal and acoustic products is neither purely volume-constrained nor purely weight-constrained. A vehicle full of acoustic slab can approach payload in a way a vehicle full of loft roll never does.
Fire-rated products also carry specification requirements that make substitution impossible — a system tested as an assembly needs the specified product, not an equivalent. That makes a damaged or wrong delivery a programme problem rather than a reorder, and it is worth checking the specification matches at handover.
What about spray foam and blown insulation?
The materials themselves are a different job. Spray foam components arrive as chemical drums and blown mineral wool in compressed bales, and neither behaves like board or roll.
Spray foam is the one that changes the classification. Two-part polyurethane systems are supplied as chemical drums that frequently carry classifications, and a delivery of them is a chemical consignment rather than an insulation one. Can you handle retrofit programme volumes?
Yes, and programme work is different from merchant supply. A funded retrofit scheme installs across dozens or hundreds of properties to a deadline, which makes it a routing exercise rather than a delivery one.
The characteristic constraint is that properties are occupied and scattered. An installer working a street can take a bulk drop; one working an estate over three months needs material arriving at the property being worked on, when it is being worked on.
Funding deadlines make the timing unforgiving. A scheme that must complete by a date competes for the same vehicles as every other scheme with the same deadline, and capacity goes to those who planned it. Book against the programme rather than against the stock arriving.
