How heavy is a safe?

Considerably heavier than its size suggests, because the whole point of the construction is mass. A modest domestic safe runs 40 to 100 kilograms and a commercial grade unit several hundred.

Safes are also awkward in a way weight alone does not capture: a narrow deep box with no handholds, going through a domestic doorway and frequently up or down stairs.

Why is a master key system a security item?

Because it is the access control for an entire building, delivered in a box. A master key suite defines which key opens which door, and possession of it before installation is possession of the building's security.

The same applies to restricted keyways. Restricted and patented key profiles exist precisely so keys cannot be copied without authorisation, and blanks for them are controlled stock rather than hardware.

Practically that means a named handover against a signature, plain packaging with no indication of contents, and no leaving a consignment at a reception. That is not theatre — it is the same standard the customer applies to the system once installed.

How urgent is a locksmith's order?

Frequently immediate, because a locksmith is called when something has already failed. A commercial door that will not lock is a premises that cannot be secured overnight.

Emergency work is the sharp end. A break-in leaves a business with a door that has to be made secure the same day, and the locksmith needs the right cylinder or lock case before they can finish.

Can you deliver a safe into a property?

To an accessible ground-floor position, with the right crew and equipment. Beyond that it becomes a specialist installation job rather than a delivery.

Stairs are the limit. A 300 kilogram safe going to a first floor needs equipment and experience we would not improvise, and a floor that can carry it — which is a structural question rather than a handling one.

What about architectural ironmongery?

It is the volume end of the same customer's order: handles, hinges, closers, escutcheons and door furniture, mostly boxed and unremarkable to move.

Finish is the one thing that matters. Architectural ironmongery is a visible finished surface — satin stainless, antique brass, powder coat — and a scratched handle is a reject on a fit-out schedule.

Is this stock a theft target?

Yes, on two counts. Safes and high-end locks have resale value, and restricted key blanks have a value to the wrong buyer that has nothing to do with their price.

That makes an unattended delivery genuinely inappropriate here rather than merely risky. A box of restricted blanks left on a doorstep is a security failure regardless of whether anyone takes it.

Do you handle collections and returns?

Yes. Safes come back for opening, servicing or disposal, faulty locks return under warranty, and old hardware leaves a building during a refurbishment.

Safe collections are the heavy version of the delivery problem with an added complication: a safe being collected is frequently in the awkward position somebody installed it in years ago.

Old locks and ironmongery are recoverable metal rather than waste. We hold Environment Agency upper tier registration CBDU654368 as a waste carrier, broker and dealer; scrap metal dealing is licensed separately and we transport rather than trade.

Do you deliver to locksmiths' vans and home addresses?

Frequently, because a large share of the trade is mobile. A locksmith works from a van and takes stock at a base that is often a home address or a lock-up.

That raises the security question rather than removing it. A consignment of cylinders and restricted blanks left on a doorstep is exactly the delivery that should not happen unattended.

What is a restricted keyway?

A patented key profile that can only be cut by authorised holders, which is what stops keys being copied at a supermarket kiosk. It is a security system rather than a hardware feature.

Blanks for restricted profiles are controlled stock. A supplier records who holds them, and possession outside that chain undermines every system built on that keyway.

That is why they travel like a keying schedule rather than like ironmongery: named handover, plain packaging, no indication of contents and no leaving at a reception.

Can you support emergency and out-of-hours work?

Yes, and locksmithing generates genuine out-of-hours demand. Break-ins, lockouts and failed commercial locks do not happen in office hours.

The supply problem is that trade counters close. A locksmith working at nine in the evening on a commercial door needs a part that is sitting in a wholesaler that shut at five.

Where a supplier operates an out-of-hours arrangement for its trade customers, transport is the piece that makes it real. That is a standing arrangement rather than something to organise on the night.

Do you move safes for domestic customers?

Yes, within the same limits that apply to trade delivery. A domestic safe going to a ground-floor position with a clear route is straightforward with the right crew.

The house is the complicating factor rather than the safe. A 100 kilogram box on a sack truck across a finished floor needs protection laid, and doorways and thresholds are where damage happens.

What about access control and electronic locking?

It is a growing part of a locksmith supplier's range and it behaves like security electronics rather than like hardware. Electronic cylinders, smart locks and access controllers carry batteries and firmware.

Lithium cells in electronic locking bring UN3480 or UN3481 into what looks like an ordinary hardware order, particularly where batteries ship separately from the units.

Do you carry sanitary and specialist door hardware?

Yes, and it sits alongside locks in most suppliers' ranges. Panic hardware, push bars, closers with hold-open devices and accessible-door ironmongery are specified items rather than generic hardware.

Panic and emergency exit hardware is certified for that use, which puts it in the same category as fire door closers: the correct item has to arrive, and a similar one is not a substitute.
