Why is calibration the real risk?

The practical rules follow: instruments travel in their own cases, in the orientation the case is designed for, secured so they cannot slide, and never with anything on top. How are hire fleet movements handled?

What about calibration and service centre movements?
They are the most sensitive leg in the sector, because the instrument is travelling precisely because its accuracy is in question or is about to be certified.
An instrument going for calibration must arrive in the condition it left in — a knock in transit either invalidates the calibration that follows or, worse, produces a certificate for an instrument that was damaged afterwards. An instrument returning from calibration is carrying a certificate that the journey can undo.
Practically that means the return leg deserves the same care as the outbound, which is not most people's instinct. Instruments returning from service travel exactly as they went, and the movement is recorded at both ends so a later question about when damage occurred has an answer rather than a debate.
How is value handled?

Do batteries in survey equipment need declaring?
Instruments with installed lithium batteries are generally straightforward; loose spare batteries in quantity are not. The classification follows the battery, not the instrument.
Lithium batteries fall under UN3480 carried alone and UN3481 installed in or packed with equipment, with road carriage governed by ADR. An instrument with its battery fitted sits comfortably within the normal provisions; a box of twenty spare packs going to a hire depot may not.

Can you move equipment between regional depots?
Yes, and depot balancing is a recurring movement in hire fleets. Instruments concentrate where the last job was rather than where the next one is.
These are schedulable rather than urgent movements, which makes them considerably cheaper than the site deliveries that get the attention. A fleet that plans balancing runs weekly rather than reacting to shortages spends less on transport and has better availability, which is the same argument that applies in every hire sector.

Do you handle instrument sales deliveries?
