T&C Logistics delivers paint and decorating sundries from merchants to decorators, contractors and sites across the UK. Solvent-based paints, thinners, brush cleaners and many sealants are flammable liquids classified for road transport, so this is not work a parcel network will take — our drivers hold ADR certification directly. Water-based emulsion is not classified but is destroyed by frost.

Decorators Merchant Delivery pricing — from £50 (ex VAT)

A decorator on site with the wrong colour has nothing to do. Paint is tinted to order from a base and a formula, and the tin that is not on the van stops the room — which is why decorators' merchants live or die on how fast they can get a mixed tin to a job.

T&C Logistics delivers for decorators' merchants, paint distributors, decorating contractors and property maintenance teams. Companies House records over 2,800 active UK companies in decorating and paint supply. Our drivers hold ADR certification, one of the credentials T&C Logistics holds directly rather than through partners. Quotes from £50 (ex VAT), quoted in full upfront before you book.

Why will a parcel network not carry paint?

Because much of it is classified. Solvent-based paints, white spirit, brush cleaner, thinners, some primers and many sealants are flammable liquids under road transport regulations, and parcel networks exclude them outright.

The practical result is that decorators discover this when an order falls outside the merchant's own delivery round. The sundries can go by parcel; the gloss and the white spirit cannot, and the job needs both.

ADR is held directly by T&C Logistics rather than through partners, alongside Driver CPC, an Operator's Licence, goods-in-transit insurance and a ULEZ-compliant fleet. That is what makes a same-day mixed-order chase possible. See our hazardous goods service and ADR van for chemical transport.

What is classified and what is not?

Solvent products generally are; water-based products generally are not. A typical decorator's order mixes both, so the consignment is assessed rather than assumed.

ProductTypical positionNote
Solvent gloss and eggshellFlammable liquidThe core classified item
White spirit / brush cleanerFlammable liquidOften the largest volume
Thinners and solventsFlammable liquidSegregation applies
Water-based emulsionNot classifiedFrost is the risk instead
Water-based trim paintNot classifiedSame frost risk
AerosolsClassifiedSmall but counts
Some sealants and adhesivesCheck the data sheetVaries by product
Brushes, rollers, tape, fillerNot classifiedBulk of the volume

The safety data sheet governs and the consignor declares. Tell us what is in the order rather than leaving it to the vehicle.

Why does frost matter to a paint delivery?

Because water-based paint freezes, and freezing destroys the emulsion permanently. It does not recover on thawing — the product separates and becomes unusable.

The exposure is in the boring parts of the operation: a vehicle standing loaded overnight in January, a pallet left in an unheated site container, or a delivery left outside a locked property. None of these look like a risk at the time.

Practically, winter deliveries are planned so paint is not left in an unheated vehicle overnight, and site deliveries need somewhere frost-free agreed before the vehicle arrives. A contractor who has nowhere warm should take smaller deliveries more often rather than a week's paint at once.

How do colour-mixed orders work?

Like any made-to-order item: the tin does not exist until the machine has tinted and shaken it, so the collection is timed to the counter rather than to a stock shelf.

That has the same booking implication as hose assemblies and cable cuts. A realistic ready-time is worth more than an optimistic one, and a driver waiting five minutes for a tin coming off the shaker is the right outcome rather than a problem.

It also means a mixed tin cannot be returned to stock. A wrong order is a genuine loss for the merchant, which is why decorators are asked to confirm the code rather than the colour name — and why a chase for a re-mix is a job the merchant would rather do quickly than argue about.

Where do decorators actually take delivery?

On site, at a house, or at a lock-up — rarely at a trade counter, because a decorator collecting is a decorator not decorating.

Domestic sites are the common case and the awkward one: a property that may be empty, a decorator working upstairs, and paint that must not be left in the rain or the cold. Contract work on commercial sites brings the usual gate, induction and compound arrangements.

What makes these deliveries work is a named contact with a phone that is answered and a clear instruction about where material goes if nobody is there. Vehicles are ULEZ-compliant for London properties. See our construction industry hub.

Do you run scheduled merchant rounds?

Yes, and they are cheaper and more predictable than chases. A merchant supplying a route of regular contractors delivers on a schedule and chases only the exceptions.

The commercial argument is the familiar one: scheduled rounds reduce chases, and chases are the expensive movements. A contractor receiving a planned delivery each morning phones the branch less, and the merchant's counter stays free for retail trade.

Where a merchant serves several contractors in an area, a routed circuit costs far less per drop than individual deliveries. See our bodyshop paint delivery service — the same classification model in the automotive trade.

Can you collect waste paint and empty tins?

Yes. Waste paint, contaminated solvent and empty tins are controlled waste, and T&C Logistics holds Environment Agency upper tier registration CBDU654368 as a waste carrier, broker and dealer.

Waste solvent and paint residue are hazardous waste with a stricter regime than general commercial waste, including consignment documentation rather than a simple transfer note and treatment at an appropriately permitted facility. The duty of care under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 stays with the producer until the waste reaches an authorised person.

Decorators working in occupied homes particularly need this leg — a customer whose garage is full of half-used tins remembers it. Where the return runs on an existing round the marginal cost is small. See our WEEE collection service.

What about wallpaper, coverings and long products?

Wallpaper is light and easily damaged, and lining paper and coving are long. Both need separating from tins rather than travelling on top of them.

Rolls crush and the damage shows when hung, which makes them a claim rather than a delivery. Coving and trim are long, brittle and mark against anything abrasive. Neither is heavy, and both are the items most likely to be damaged in a load dominated by paint.

Give us the longest item where coving or lengths are included — it occasionally changes the vehicle even though the weight does not.

Do you supply social housing and maintenance contracts?

Yes, and they are a large share of the decorating trade. Housing associations and local authority maintenance contractors run continuous programmes of void property and planned redecoration work.

The pattern is different from retail decorating: bulk quantities of a small range of colours, delivered to a contractor's store or directly to void properties, on a programme rather than to order. Voids in particular have fixed turnaround targets — an empty property is lost rent.

Direct-to-property delivery raises the access question every void job has: an empty house, a key with the contractor, and material that must not be left where it will be stolen or frozen. A named contact and a delivery arrangement agreed in advance solve it.

Do you handle spray and industrial coatings?

Yes, and they are more heavily classified than trade decorating products. Industrial coatings, two-pack systems, floor paints and their associated thinners and hardeners are largely flammable and sometimes corrosive.

Two-pack systems bring a segregation question as well as a classification one, since the hardener and the base may carry different classifications. Quantity thresholds matter, and a pallet of 20-litre containers is a different consignment from a case of five-litre tins.

Our drivers hold ADR certification directly rather than through partners, so these consignments can be carried correctly rather than split across suppliers. Tell us the products, quantities and packaging.

Can you cover a merchant's own delivery van?

Yes, and it is a common arrangement. Most decorators' merchants run one van, which means one driver, which means the delivery operation stops when that person is off.

The problem is worse than in most trades because of classification. A merchant whose driver is off cannot simply put the paint in a taxi or a parcel network — the solvent products need an ADR-certified driver, and that is not something a temp agency supplies at short notice.

Cover works from a documented round: customer list, access notes, delivery windows, and which customers take classified product. Merchants who keep that current can be covered the same day; those who cannot usually lose the day's deliveries entirely.

What does decorators merchant delivery cost?

Priced per circuit for scheduled work and per job for chases, quoted upfront, with fuel and goods-in-transit insurance included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why will a parcel network not take paint?
Because much of it is classified. Solvent-based paints, white spirit, brush cleaner, thinners and many sealants are flammable liquids under road transport regulations and parcel networks exclude them outright. Decorators discover this when an order falls outside the merchant's own round — the sundries can go by parcel, the gloss and white spirit cannot, and the job needs both.
Which decorating products are classified?
Solvent products generally are; water-based products generally are not. A typical order mixes both, so the consignment is assessed rather than assumed. Aerosols count even in small quantities, and sealants and adhesives vary by product. The safety data sheet governs and the consignor declares — tell us what is in the order rather than leaving it to the vehicle.
Does emulsion really get ruined by frost?
Yes, permanently. Water-based paint freezes, the emulsion separates, and it does not recover on thawing. The exposure is in dull places: a vehicle standing loaded overnight in January, a pallet in an unheated site container, a delivery left outside a locked property. Winter deliveries are planned so paint is not left in an unheated vehicle, and sites need somewhere frost-free agreed.
Will the paint be ready when the driver arrives?
Often not, and that is normal — tins are tinted and shaken to order, so the item does not exist until minutes before collection. A driver waiting five minutes for a tin coming off the shaker is the right outcome. A mixed tin also cannot be returned to stock, so a wrong order is a real loss, which is why colour codes are confirmed rather than colour names.
Where do decorators usually take delivery?
On site, at a house, or at a lock-up — rarely at a trade counter, because a decorator collecting is a decorator not decorating. Domestic sites are the common and awkward case: a property that may be empty, a decorator working upstairs, and paint that must not be left in rain or cold. A named contact with a phone that is answered is what makes it work.
Can you take away waste paint and empty tins?
Yes. Waste paint, contaminated solvent and empty tins are controlled waste, and we hold Environment Agency upper tier registration CBDU654368. Waste solvent and residue are hazardous waste with a stricter regime — consignment documentation rather than a simple transfer note, and an appropriately permitted destination. Decorators in occupied homes particularly need this leg.
How is wallpaper protected in a paint load?
By separation — rolls travel apart from tins rather than on top of them. Wallpaper is light and crushes easily, and the damage shows when it is hung, which makes it a claim rather than a delivery. Coving and lining lengths are long, brittle and mark against anything abrasive. Give us the longest item where lengths are included.
