How must an embroidery machine be prepared before transport?
By an engineer or a competent operator: the carriage locked or clamped, thread and needles removed or secured, hoops and frames packed separately, and any shipping brackets refitted where the manufacturer supplied them.
The carriage is the reason. An embroidery machine's pantograph moves the hoop under the needles with fine precision, and it is driven by belts and rails that are not designed to absorb road shock while free to move. Manufacturers ship new machines with the carriage locked and shipping brackets fitted for exactly this reason, and a machine being relocated deserves the same treatment.
Shipping brackets are the first thing lost after installation. If yours have gone, the dealer or manufacturer can usually supply a set, and it is worth ordering before the move. What about direct-to-garment printers and ink systems?
They need preparing by someone who knows the machine. DTG and DTF printers hold ink in lines, dampers and a printhead, and a printhead that dries out during a move is an expensive component to replace.
Manufacturers publish transport procedures for these machines and they vary: some require the ink system to be flushed and capped, some require a maintenance cycle before and after the move, and most require the printhead to be protected. None of that is transport work, and a carrier who tells you it is should be treated with caution.
What we can control is the environment and the handling. Printers travel upright, secured, and are not left in a cold vehicle overnight where ink viscosity may be affected. Where a machine is moving to a workshop that is not yet heated, that is worth raising - the first thing an engineer will ask about is temperature during transit and on arrival.
Can you get a six-head machine out of a workshop?
Usually, but it needs surveying rather than assuming. Multi-head machines are wide, and many workshops are in industrial units where the machine went in before a partition wall or a mezzanine did.
The measurements that decide it are the machine's width and depth against the doorway, any turn in the route, and whether the floor from machine to door is level. A 900 kg machine on skates needs a level run - a threshold lip or a drainage channel across a workshop floor is a genuine obstacle at that weight.
Upper-floor workshops are the harder case. A goods lift needs both a capacity in kilograms and internal dimensions, and a machine may fail on width where the rating is comfortable. Where the machine cannot leave whole, part-dismantling is an engineer's job with its own lead time, and it needs arranging before the vehicle is booked. What is different about a second-hand machine purchase?
Nobody has checked anything. A machine bought online or at auction is frequently still wired in, has no shipping brackets, sits behind other equipment, and is larger than the buyer pictured.
The pattern repeats often enough to be predictable. The seller is closing a business and is not available on the day; the machine has not run for months and nobody knows whether the carriage locks; the unit's access is through a shared yard with a barrier and no keyholder. All of these stop a collection that looked simple on paper.

Can you handle a workshop relocation?
Yes. Garment decorators relocate as a unit - machines, stock, racking and finishing benches - usually over a weekend so production loses as little time as possible.
The sequence matters because the machines are the constraint. Heavy machines go last out of the old unit and first into the new one, so they are not manoeuvred around stock and benches at either end. Production stock and consumables are bulky but light and fill the vehicle after the machines are placed.
Downtime is what the business is actually paying for. A decorator with orders on a deadline loses more from three days of no production than from a larger vehicle, which is worth weighing when choosing between one large load and several small ones. Do you deliver new machines from dealer to customer?
Yes, and dealer deliveries are the cleanest jobs in this category because the machine leaves the dealer prepared, crated or braced, with its shipping brackets fitted.
That preparation is worth its weight. A machine that arrives from a dealer with the carriage locked and the frame supported can be handled straightforwardly at the far end; the same machine collected from a customer's workshop without preparation is a different risk profile entirely. Dealers know this, which is why new-machine deliveries rarely go wrong.
What still needs establishing is the customer's end: doorway width against machine width, whether the workshop is at ground level, the floor surface between the vehicle and the final position, and who will be there. Small decorators frequently work alone, so the crew has to place the machine without help from the recipient.
