Gym equipment is dense in a way that catches people out. A commercial treadmill is heavier than most domestic appliances, a selectorised machine carries a weight stack that is most of its mass, and a rack of dumbbells is a tonne of steel occupying two square metres. None of it is difficult to move, but all of it has to be planned rather than improvised.

Weight is the planning number and it varies widely. Published specifications put a commercial treadmill at roughly 130-200 kg, a cross trainer at 100-180 kg, a selectorised resistance machine at 150-300 kg with the stack fitted, and a full power rack at 150-350 kg depending on gauge and footprint. Free weights are the extreme case: a complete dumbbell set from 2.5 kg to 50 kg is well over a tonne of steel.

Will the floor and the lift take it?

Those are the two questions that decide a gym delivery, and both need answering before the vehicle is loaded. Gyms are frequently on upper floors or in basements, and free weights concentrate more load per square metre than almost any other commercial fit-out.

Floor loading is a matter for the building, not the carrier. A free-weights area imposes both a static load and an impact load when weights are dropped, and manufacturers and gym designers work to loading figures that a structural engineer signs off. It is worth raising early, because a floor problem discovered after a tonne of plates is on site is expensive.

Lift capacity is our problem more directly. A 300 kg resistance machine plus two handlers exceeds the rating of many passenger lifts and some older goods lifts. Give us the lift's capacity in kilograms and its internal dimensions - a machine may fail on height or depth even where the rating is fine. Where equipment will not fit a lift, stair skates and additional crew are the answer, and that needs pricing at quote stage.

Can weight stacks be removed to make the lift easier?

On most selectorised machines, yes, and it transforms the job. Removing the stack can halve the weight of the heaviest single item in a gym load.

This is worth checking with the manufacturer's documentation before the move rather than improvising on the day. Where the stack is designed to be removed for installation - which it commonly is, because the machine has to get into the room somehow - the same route works in reverse for a relocation. Where it is not, the machine moves whole and the crew and equipment have to match that.

Plate-loaded machines and racks usually ship part-assembled and can be broken down further, which is again a manufacturer question. Our two-man delivery vehicle is the standard configuration; heavier single items may need a third handler, which we would rather allocate at quote stage than discover on site.

How do gym fit-outs and refreshes work?

To the installer's build sequence, with the heaviest and least mobile equipment placed first. Once a rack is bolted down and machines are positioned, the route through the room narrows.

A full gym fit-out is a large volume of dense equipment arriving into a room that has to stay workable. Racks and fixed rigs go in first because they anchor the layout; resistance machines follow; cardio, which needs power and data connections, goes where the floor boxes are; free weights and storage last, because they can be carried around obstacles more easily than a treadmill can.

Hotel, school and workplace gyms add access constraints: the gym is rarely near the loading door, and the route usually crosses areas that cannot be blocked during the day. That pushes deliveries out of hours. We work evenings and weekends across the network, and vehicles are ULEZ-compliant for central London sites.

Can you move a whole gym to a new site?

Yes, and gym relocations are volume moves on a fixed date, usually driven by a lease end. They are planned as a sequence with both sites live on the same day.

The dependency runs the wrong way round from a fit-out: equipment has to come out of the old site before it can go into the new one, so any delay at the first site pushes the second. Where the new gym is not ready, the alternative is storage, which is not part of our transport service and needs arranging separately.

Volume is the other planning point. A mid-size gym typically needs several 7.5-tonne or 18-tonne loads rather than one, and the free-weights element alone can fill a vehicle on weight before it fills it on space. Send an equipment list with model numbers - manufacturers publish weights, and a list turns a guess into a plan.

What happens to equipment at end of life?

Cardio equipment is electrical and falls under WEEE when scrapped; steel resistance equipment and free weights usually have resale or scrap-metal value. T&C Logistics holds Environment Agency upper tier registration CBDU654368 as a waste carrier, broker and dealer.

Commercial gym refreshes generate a lot of this. Treadmills, cross trainers and bikes contain motors, control boards and displays, and fall under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013. Resistance machines, racks and weights are largely steel and are frequently worth more to a second-hand dealer than to a scrap merchant, particularly where the equipment is a recognised commercial brand in working order.

Can you deliver a home gym installation?

Yes, and domestic installations are a growing part of this work - but they are harder than commercial ones, not easier, because there is no loading bay and often no lift.

The equipment is frequently commercial-specification: a 200 kg treadmill or a 300 kg rack going into a garage, a spare bedroom, or a converted outbuilding at the end of a garden. The constraints that decide the job are the doorway width, the number of steps, whether the route crosses grass or gravel, and how far the vehicle can get from the room.

Floor loading deserves a mention here too. Domestic upper floors are not designed for a free-weights area, and a home gym above a living room is a question for a builder before it is a question for a carrier. Where equipment is going into a garage or ground-floor room on a concrete slab, that concern largely disappears.

Two-person handling is standard and we deliver into the room rather than to the kerb. Assembly stays with the installer or the customer, and most commercial-specification equipment arrives part-assembled with the manufacturer's instructions.

How far ahead should a gym move be booked?

As soon as the date is fixed, because gym moves need vehicle capacity, crew size and access checks that cannot be arranged at short notice.

The specific reason is crew. A standard two-person crew covers most of a gym load, but heavy single items and stair moves need a third handler, and that allocation competes with every other job that day. A move booked a week out gets the crew it needs; one booked the night before gets whatever is free.

Lease-end relocations have a hard date months in advance, so there is rarely a good reason to book late. New-gym fit-outs slip more often, which argues for a provisional booking with a confirmed date later rather than no booking at all.
