Cannock's dangerous-goods problem is at the delivery end, not the collection end. Of the 4,254 active companies registered to the CANNOCK post town, 762 are construction businesses - 18 per cent of the base and the highest count of the ten towns around our Oldbury base - with 110 more whose primary classification is development of building projects. What they need moved is resin, adhesive, sealant, fuel and hardener: Class 3 with Class 5 or Class 8 alongside it. The load itself is routine. The destination is not. A live site has no reception, no safe place and frequently nobody authorised to sign, and a dangerous-goods consignment is the one category that absolutely cannot be left behind a gate. The town's position helps on the road legs - M6 junction 11, the M6 Toll and the A5 Watling Street all meet here, so there is usually an alternative route. We carry classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 with ADR-certificated drivers; classes 1 and 7 we refuse.
Can you deliver dangerous goods onto a live construction site?
Yes, and it is the bulk of what we do here — but it needs three things confirmed at booking rather than discovered on arrival: who meets the driver, where the material is to be put, and whether the site has a delivery window or a one-way system around it.
The reason is simple and specific to this class of work. A general delivery can be left in a safe place or handed to anyone on site. A dangerous-goods consignment cannot. If there is nobody to receive it, the load returns on the vehicle, you pay for the run, and the material is still not on site. Where a gate contact cannot be confirmed we will say so and suggest delivery to the contractor's yard or compound instead, which is a better outcome than a failed drop.
| Question | Why it decides the job |
|---|---|
| Who meets the driver | The consignment cannot be left — no contact means no handover |
| Where it is stored | A designated store or bunded area, not a corner of the compound |
| Lifting plant on site | Decides whether a tail-lift vehicle is needed |
| Delivery window | Sites with a booking system will turn an unbooked vehicle away |
| Access route | Height and width limits, one-way systems, compound gates |
Which entries does construction work actually produce?
Class 3 overwhelmingly, with Class 5 and Class 8 behind it. Resin solutions under UN1866, adhesives containing flammable liquid under UN1133, paint under UN1263 and gas oil under UN1202 are the recurring ones, with peroxide hardeners in division 5.2 and acids or caustics in Class 8.
The hardener is the entry worth flagging when you book. Organic peroxide hardeners sit in division 5.2, several entries carry a control temperature, and some are not permitted for carriage at all — so a two-part resin system is frequently two different ADR problems in one order. Send both UN numbers, not just the resin's.
| Trade | Firms registered to the post town | Typical entry |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | 762 | UN1866 resin solution, UN1133 adhesives, UN1263 paint |
| Development of building projects | 110 | UN1202 gas oil for site plant |
| Manufacturing | 305 | UN1993 flammable liquid n.o.s., Class 8 corrosives |
| Automotive component manufacture | 8 | UN3480 and UN3481 lithium batteries |
| Specialty chemical and fuel wholesale | 3 | Class 3 and Class 5.1 entries |
| Wholesale and retail | 513 | mixed small-package Class 3 |
Can you collect from a builders' merchant on our behalf?
Yes, and that is the usual shape of the job: the gang is on site, the material is at a counter, and nobody can leave to fetch it. We collect against your order and deliver to the site or compound.
One requirement differs from a normal third-party collection. The merchant is the consignor, so the merchant raises the transport document or applies the limited-quantities marking — neither you from the site nor the driver at the counter can do it. Give us the order reference, the counter's address and the UN numbers if you have them; the counter needs to have the goods correctly packed, marked and documented. A driver arriving to an unmarked dangerous-goods order cannot load it, so where the counter is unfamiliar with that it is worth a call first.
Can you move site fuel for plant and generators?
Yes. Gas oil under UN1202 is a Class 3 flammable liquid and within our scope, and it is a recurring Cannock job because the town's 110 building developers run plant and generators that need refuelling on site rather than at a pump.
Two constraints are worth knowing. The quantity matters: ADR applies in a reduced form below certain thresholds per transport unit, and above them the vehicle needs orange-plate marking and the full specification, so a 200-litre movement and a 1,000-litre movement are not the same job. And the receiving end needs a bunded area or a nominated point — tipping fuel into a bowser in the open corner of a compound is not a handover we will make. Send the quantity with the enquiry and we will tell you which specification applies before the vehicle is priced.
What about contaminated or waste chemical collections?
Treat these as a separate conversation rather than an extension of a delivery booking. A waste chemical movement is governed by waste duty-of-care requirements as well as by ADR, and the paperwork is different from a commercial consignment note.
On a construction site the usual cases are part-used resin, contaminated absorbent after a spill, and empty-but-uncleaned containers — and the last of those catches people out, because an uncleaned empty still travels under the entry of whatever it held rather than as general waste. If you need material taken off a Cannock site rather than delivered to it, say so at the enquiry stage and tell us what it is and how it is contained, because the route, the paperwork and the receiving facility all have to be arranged rather than assumed.
Who is responsible for classification and the paperwork?
The consignor — the merchant, manufacturer or whoever hands the goods over. Classification, packing, marking, labelling and the transport document are the sender's duties under the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations, the Great Britain implementation of ADR. We verify the load against that declaration and refuse a mismatch.
| Item | Example |
|---|---|
| UN number | UN1866 |
| Proper shipping name | RESIN SOLUTION, flammable |
| Class or division | 3 |
| Packing group | II |
| Number and description of packages | 2 x 20 litre metal pails |
| Total quantity | 40 litres |
DVSA enforces this at the roadside. Where the load is small enough to travel as limited quantities the marking differs and a full note is not required — send inner-receptacle sizes and we will tell you which regime applies.
Which vehicle suits a site delivery?
Often a smaller one than the load would suggest, because compound gates, height restrictions and unmade ground decide access before payload does. Then the question is what gets the material off the vehicle.
Where there is no telehandler or forklift, the tail lift on a Luton van or a 7.5-tonne box truck is what makes the drop possible. Where the compound is tight, a small van at up to 500 kg reaches the cabin door when nothing larger can turn. Tell us the access and we match the vehicle to it rather than to the kilograms.
What does the driver hold?
An ADR vocational training certificate for the classes on the vehicle, Driver CPC, and our Operator's Licence, with a ULEZ-compliant fleet. Those are the held credentials and they are checkable on our licences page.
T&C Logistics does not hold a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser appointment of its own and does not imply one — where a consignment needs DGSA input we work with partners who hold it. Nor do we hold any site-specific accreditation scheme membership: if your principal contractor requires a particular carrier accreditation at the gate, tell us before booking so we can say honestly whether we meet it rather than finding out at the barrier.
How do the M6, M6 Toll and A5 affect a time-critical ADR run?
They give redundancy, which matters more on dangerous-goods work than on general freight. Junction 11 of the M6 is signed for Cannock on the A460, the M6 Toll runs parallel past the southern edge, and the A5 Watling Street crosses the A34 at Churchbridge.
A dangerous-goods load stuck in a stationary queue is a load that has to be managed rather than simply delayed, so having an alternative route out is a genuine operational benefit. Where a route uses the M6 Toll the charge is passed through at the published rate inside the fixed price rather than marked up. Southbound, our base is about 13 miles away, which means a Cannock collection for a Midlands delivery often pairs with a return leg already pointed that way.
What does it cost, and how do I book?
From £50 (ex VAT) at the simplest end, quoted as one fixed price for the whole dedicated job before booking. Final price depends on distance, vehicle, urgency and time - quoted in full upfront before you book.
| Driver | Effect |
|---|---|
| Distance and return leg | Dominant factor on any dedicated job |
| Site waiting time | An unmanned gate or busy plant holds the vehicle |
| Failed handover | A consignment that cannot be received returns on the vehicle |
| Segregation | Resin with a 5.2 hardener may need separating |
| Tail lift | Priced in where the site has no lifting plant |
| Tolls and clean-air zones | M6 Toll, Birmingham Clean Air Zone and the £12.50 London ULEZ at cost |
| Out of hours | Evening, overnight and weekend work priced separately |

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can a dangerous-goods delivery be left on site?
- No — this is the one category that cannot be left in a safe place or handed to whoever is nearest. A named contact has to meet the driver. If nobody is available the load returns on the vehicle, you pay for the run and the material still is not on site, so where a gate contact cannot be confirmed we will suggest delivery to the contractor's yard or compound instead. That is a better outcome than a failed drop.
- Do you need the hardener's UN number as well as the resin's?
- Yes, and it is the detail most often missed. A two-part resin system is frequently two separate ADR problems: the resin is usually Class 3, while a peroxide hardener sits in division 5.2, where several entries carry a control temperature and some are not permitted for carriage at all. Send both UN numbers with the enquiry and we will confirm whether the pair travels on one vehicle, two, or not at all.
- Can you collect from a builders' merchant for us?
- Yes, and it is the usual shape of the job. One requirement differs from a normal collection: the merchant is the consignor, so the merchant raises the transport document or applies the limited-quantities marking — neither you from site nor our driver at the counter can do it. Give us the order reference, the counter's address and the UN numbers; the counter needs the goods correctly packed, marked and documented or the driver cannot load.
- Will a tail-lift vehicle fit our compound?
- Tell us the access and we match the vehicle to it rather than to the weight. Compound gates, height restrictions and unmade ground decide what can get in before payload matters. Where there is no telehandler or forklift a Luton van or a 7.5-tonne box truck puts the pallet on the ground; where the compound is tight, a small van at up to 500 kg reaches the cabin door when nothing larger can turn.
- Is the M6 Toll charged on top of the price?
- It is passed through at the published rate inside the single fixed price you agree, not marked up. Having the M6 Toll alongside M6 junction 11 and the A5 is a real benefit on this work: a dangerous-goods load in a stationary queue has to be managed rather than simply delayed, so an alternative route out of Cannock is worth more here than it would be on general freight.
- Do you hold a contractor accreditation for site access?
- No, and it is better to establish that before the vehicle is booked than at the barrier. T&C Logistics holds driver-level ADR vocational training certificates, Driver CPC, an Operator's Licence, goods-in-transit and public liability insurance and a ULEZ-compliant fleet — the full list is published on our licences page. If your principal contractor requires a specific carrier accreditation scheme at the gate, tell us and we will say honestly whether we meet it.
