Cannock is the construction town of this cluster by a wide margin. Of the 4,254 active companies registered to the CANNOCK post town, 762 are construction businesses - 18 per cent of the entire base - with 110 more whose primary classification is development of building projects, 305 manufacturers and 166 licensed vehicle operators. A former coalfield turned distribution corridor, it sits where junction 11 of the M6 meets the A460, the M6 Toll runs past the southern edge and the A5 Watling Street crosses the A34 at Churchbridge. For pallet work that mix means most consignments finish somewhere that is not a warehouse: a compound, a plot, a half-built unit. The pallet count is rarely the hard part. The ground, the lifting plant and whether anyone is at the gate are. Our base is about 13 miles south.
Can you deliver pallets onto a live construction site?
Yes, and it is the majority of what we do here — but it is a different job from a warehouse delivery and needs three answers at booking. Who meets the driver, what will lift the pallet off, and whether the site runs a delivery booking system.
Get those wrong and the vehicle waits or returns loaded, and either way you pay for the run. Get them right and a site drop is straightforward, because a site usually has space and often has plant, which a town-centre address does not. The next three sections take each in turn, in the order they actually cause failures.
What does the ground at the drop point decide?
Whether a tail lift can be used at all. A hydraulic tail lift places a pallet on a hard, reasonably level surface; it will not place one safely on mud, hardcore, a slope or a temporary roadway that has broken up.
So on a site the realistic choices are: unload at the compound entrance or site road where the surface is sound, use the site's own telehandler or forklift at the working position, or break the pallet down at the vehicle. Which of those applies changes the time on site and sometimes the vehicle. A useful rule of thumb is that if a loaded pallet truck could not be pushed across it, a tail lift should not be placing a pallet on it. Tell us the surface at the intended drop point rather than the site address alone.
| At the drop point | Offload method | Effect on the job |
|---|---|---|
| Telehandler or forklift available and free | Site plant lifts from the bed | Fastest; no tail lift needed |
| Hard level standing, no plant | Tail lift and pallet truck | Works; adds time on site |
| Hardcore, mud or a slope | Unload at the sound surface nearest | Receiver moves it the last stretch |
| No sound surface and no plant | Break down by hand at the vehicle | Longest; suits cartons, not single heavy units |
Who unloads — your tail lift or the site's telehandler?
Whichever is confirmed in advance. Site plant is faster and handles any weight the vehicle can carry, but a telehandler that is busy elsewhere on the site is not available plant, and a driver cannot operate it.
That last point catches people out. Our driver will not get on your telehandler — they are not trained or authorised on your equipment and your insurance would not expect them to be. So if the plan is site plant, the plan needs a site operator available at the delivery time. Where that cannot be promised, book a tail lift as the fallback and we size the vehicle for it; the alternative is a loaded vehicle waiting for a machine.
Which Cannock trades move pallets?
Construction receives them, manufacturing and wholesale send them, and the town's haulage base buys capacity. The counts below are Companies House records for the CANNOCK post town.
| Sector | Firms registered to the post town | Pallet role |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | 762 | Receives on site and at yards |
| Wholesale and retail | 513 | Stock transfers and trade counter runs |
| Manufacturing | 305 | Sends components and fabrications |
| Development of building projects | 110 | Receives materials and plant parts |
| Freight transport by road | 85 | Buys overflow capacity |
| Residential care and social work | 64 | Receives consumables, no bay or forklift |
| Warehousing and storage | 6 | Sends and receives bulk |
How many pallets fit on each vehicle?
Two to fourteen. On construction work the limit is often the access road or the compound gate rather than the deck, so the biggest vehicle that could carry the load is frequently not the one that should be sent.
| Vehicle | Payload | Full UK pallets | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box van | 1,200-1,500 kg | 2-4 | Small drops, tight compounds |
| Luton van | about 1,250 kg | 4-5 | Tail-lift drops on restricted access |
| 7.5-tonne box truck | 2,500-3,000 kg | 6-8 | The usual site vehicle where access allows |
| 18-tonne rigid | 9,000-10,000 kg | 12-14 | Yard and depot deliveries |
What about long or oversized construction loads?
Length is handled, and it is a separate question from pallet count. Boards, lengths of steel, ducting, trunking and fencing panels run out of load length long before they trouble a payload — a 5-metre item needs a vehicle with 5 metres of deck regardless of weighing almost nothing.
For loads that are long and need to come off at the side rather than the rear, a flatbed or dropside is usually the answer rather than a box body, because a box constrains the lift. Send the longest dimension with the enquiry. It is the single most common reason a Cannock booking changes vehicle between enquiry and dispatch, and it is cheaper to establish on the phone than at the gate.
Can you deliver before the gang starts?
Yes. Early delivery, so the material is on site when work begins rather than arriving mid-morning, is one of the clearer advantages of a dedicated vehicle, and we take enquiries round the clock with answers from 06:00, seven days a week.
Two caveats worth stating. Someone still has to receive it — an early delivery to an unmanned gate is a failed delivery, not an early one. And out-of-hours work is priced separately from a standard weekday job, because a vehicle and driver are committed outside normal patterns; that sits inside the fixed price you agree rather than arriving later as a surcharge.
What if the site runs a delivery booking system?
Give us the slot and the reference. Larger sites operate booked delivery windows with a tolerance either side, and a vehicle arriving outside it is turned away or re-booked — which costs a whole run.
A dedicated vehicle is better placed to hit a slot than a network delivery is, because it is not waiting on a trunk arrival or a depot sort before it leaves. What we need is the window, the booking reference, the gate procedure and any induction requirement for the driver. Where the slot is tight we will tell you what time the goods have to be ready at the collection end to make it, rather than accepting the booking and hoping.
Do you take surplus material and empty pallets back?
On request. A dedicated vehicle is returning empty anyway, so a back-load of surplus material, empty pallets or stillages usually costs little compared with arranging a separate collection.
Two things to settle at booking. Whether the pallets are being exchanged or simply removed, and whether anything coming back is contaminated — part-used resin, a container with residue, or absorbent after a spill — because that turns a return load into a waste movement with its own duty-of-care paperwork and a different destination. Say which when you book rather than presenting it to the driver, since a dangerous or waste consignment cannot be loaded on a nod. See hazardous goods in Cannock.
Why dedicated rather than a pallet network?
Because a network cannot promise you a vehicle, a time or a method of offload — and on a construction site all three matter. The delivery vehicle is whatever the local depot runs, timed windows are not reliably available, and tail-lift-to-site is outside what most network services undertake.
For a single standard pallet to an accessible yard with a forklift and a day or two spare, a network is cheaper per pallet and we will say so plainly. For a compound with a booked slot and a telehandler that may be busy, the dedicated vehicle is the only version of the job that works.
What does it cost, and how do I book?
From £50 (ex VAT) at the smallest end, quoted as one fixed price for the whole dedicated job before collection. Final price depends on distance, vehicle, urgency and time - quoted in full upfront before you book. Goods-in-transit cover is £50,000 per consignment, extending to £1,000,000 through partner carriers where value requires it, with public liability at £1,000,000; limits and exclusions are in our terms.
| Driver | Effect |
|---|---|
| Distance and return leg | Dominant factor on any dedicated job |
| Offload method | Tail lift, site plant or hand break-down each take different time |
| Site waiting time | An unmanned gate or a busy telehandler holds the vehicle |
| Load length | A long item forces a larger vehicle regardless of weight |
| Booked slot | A narrow window constrains what else the vehicle can do |
| Out of hours | Early, evening and weekend work priced separately |
| Tolls and clean-air zones | M6 Toll, Birmingham Clean Air Zone and the £12.50 London ULEZ at cost |

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can a tail lift unload a pallet onto a construction site?
- Only onto a hard, reasonably level surface. A tail lift will not place a pallet safely on mud, hardcore, a slope or a broken-up temporary roadway. A useful test is whether a loaded pallet truck could be pushed across it — if not, the tail lift should not be placing a pallet there. The realistic alternatives are unloading at the nearest sound surface, using the site's own plant, or breaking the pallet down at the vehicle.
- Will your driver use our telehandler?
- No. Our driver is not trained or authorised on your equipment and your insurance would not expect them to be, so if the plan is site plant then a site operator has to be available at the delivery time. A telehandler busy elsewhere on the site is not available plant. Where that cannot be promised, book a tail lift as the fallback and we size the vehicle for it rather than leaving a loaded vehicle waiting.

It cannot be loaded on a nod at the gate.
- Can you hit a booked delivery slot on a managed site?
- Yes, and a dedicated vehicle is better placed to than a network delivery, because it is not waiting on a trunk arrival or depot sort before setting off. Give us the window, the booking reference, the gate procedure and any driver induction requirement. Where the slot is tight we will tell you what time the goods must be ready at the collection end rather than accepting the booking and hoping.
