Stourbridge is the largest business base of the ten towns around our Oldbury base - 4,664 active companies registered to the STOURBRIDGE post town - and its dangerous-goods profile is the most technical. Three chemical manufacturers, 4 specialty chemical firms, 4 fuel wholesalers and 6 food producers are registered here, and specialty chemistry is where Class 5 appears: oxidising substances in division 5.1 and organic peroxides in division 5.2. Division 5.2 is the one worth understanding before you book, because some entries require temperature control in transit and some are not permitted for carriage at all. Layered on top is a local quirk: in a town built on glass, a reagent in a glass inner receptacle is simultaneously a fragile item and a dangerous-goods package, and the handling rules for those two things do not always agree. We carry classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 with ADR-certificated drivers; classes 1 and 7 we refuse.
What makes Class 5 different from the rest of the ADR list?
Division 5.2 is the only part of our carried scope where the entry itself can rule out carriage, and where the vehicle may need to hold a temperature. Organic peroxides are thermally unstable: several entries carry a control temperature and an emergency temperature, and some are forbidden for transport outright.
Division 5.1 is more conventional — oxidising substances such as UN2014 hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution — but still needs separating from combustibles, which is a real constraint on a mixed load. The practical consequence for a Stourbridge booking is that Class 5 is the one class where we need the full entry, not just the class number, before we will quote.
| Division | Material | Carried | Handling requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.1 | Oxidising substances, e.g. UN2014 hydrogen peroxide solution | Yes | Separation from combustible material and Class 3 |
| 5.2 | Organic peroxides, e.g. UN3105 organic peroxide type D liquid | Case by case | Control and emergency temperatures where the entry specifies them |
| 5.2 | Entries ADR does not permit for carriage | No | Not carried by anyone — the entry forbids it |
Can you hold a temperature on a dangerous-goods load?
Yes — we run chilled at 2-8 °C, ambient controlled at 15-25 °C, frozen at -18 °C and below, and deep frozen on dry ice, in dedicated vehicles with no shared load. For a Class 5.2 entry carrying a control temperature, that capability is what makes the job possible rather than a convenience.
Two things to be clear about. First, we do not set the temperature — the entry and the consignor's instructions do, and we carry to the figure you specify. Second, we hold a temperature-controlled service but we are not a validated cold-chain provider for pharmaceutical wholesale: for consignments needing full Good Distribution Practice authorisation we coordinate with GDP-certified partner carriers, and T&C Logistics is not an MHRA-licensed wholesale dealer. See temperature-controlled transport.
How do you carry a reagent packed in glass?
As a dangerous-goods package first and a fragile one second, because the two sets of rules can conflict. ADR requires packages to be secured against movement; fragile handling instincts say cushion and isolate. Done badly, cushioning becomes the thing that lets a package shift.
In practice the answer is a dedicated vehicle with nothing loaded against the consignment, packages secured as the packing instruction requires, and the vehicle driven for the load rather than the schedule. We supply no packaging — the inner receptacles, absorbent and outer package are the consignor's responsibility under the packing instruction for the entry — so what we need from you is confirmation that the combination packaging is as specified, not a request to make it safe at the kerb.
Which other classes come out of Stourbridge?
Class 3 and Class 8 in volume, Class 2 occasionally, and Class 9 from the electronics and automotive side. The counts below are Companies House records for the STOURBRIDGE post town.
| Trade | Firms registered to the post town | Typical entry |
|---|---|---|
| Specialty chemical firms | 4 | Class 5.1 and 5.2, Class 8 UN1830 sulphuric acid |
| Chemical manufacturers | 3 | UN1993 flammable liquid n.o.s., Class 8 corrosives |
| Fuel wholesalers | 4 | UN1202 gas oil, UN1203 petrol |
| Food manufacturers | 6 | Class 8 cleaning and CIP chemicals |
| Automotive and electronics manufacture | 10 | UN3480 and UN3481 lithium batteries |
| Manufacturing overall | 295 | mixed Class 3, 8 and 9 |
Do you move food-industry cleaning chemicals?
Yes, and they are a steadier source of Class 8 work here than the chemical manufacturers are. Six food producers are registered to the post town, and clean-in-place regimes run on caustics and acids — UN1824 sodium hydroxide solution and UN1789 hydrochloric acid are the entries that recur.
Three features make this work distinctive. The deliveries are scheduled rather than urgent, so they suit a planned slot instead of immediate dispatch, which prices better. The receiving site is a food production facility, which usually means a goods-in procedure, a hygiene requirement at the door and a nominated bunded unloading point rather than a general yard. And the return leg often carries empty containers back, which is a second dangerous-goods movement in its own right unless the containers have been properly cleaned and the residue entry removed — an uncleaned empty still travels under the entry of what it held. Tell us which of those apply at booking and the driver arrives with the right expectation instead of waiting at a gate.
Which vehicle carries a Class 5 or Class 8 load?
Packaged chemical loads bind on weight, not volume, so the choice is made on payload — and a control temperature overrides it entirely, because then the question is which vehicles can hold the figure.
| Vehicle | Payload | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Small van | up to 500 kg | cartons, bottled reagents, limited quantities |
| Box van | 1,200-1,500 kg | part-pallet drummed loads with a tail lift |
| Refrigerated van | up to about 1,000 kg | Class 5.2 entries with a control temperature |
| 7.5-tonne box truck | 2,500-3,000 kg | 2 IBCs or 6-8 drummed pallets |
| 18-tonne rigid | 9,000-10,000 kg | 12-14 drummed pallets |
Who classifies the load and raises the paperwork?
The consignor. Classification, packing, marking, labelling and the transport document are the sender's duties under the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations, the Great Britain implementation of ADR. We check the load against that declaration before we take it, and we refuse a mismatch.
On Class 5 work the note needs to be right in one extra respect: where a control temperature applies, it belongs on the document, and the driver cannot infer it. DVSA enforces this at the roadside. The six standard items — UN number, proper shipping name, class or division, packing group, number and description of packages, total quantity — are the minimum, and for a 5.2 entry the temperature detail sits alongside them.
What does the driver and vehicle need to hold?
An ADR vocational training certificate covering the classes on board, Driver CPC, and our Operator's Licence. The fleet is ULEZ-compliant. For a temperature-controlled Class 5.2 run the vehicle is a refrigerated van rather than a standard one.
We do not hold a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser appointment in-house and do not imply one — where a consignment needs DGSA input we work with partners who hold it. Everything we do hold is listed on our licences page: ADR driver certification, Driver CPC, the Operator's Licence, goods-in-transit and public liability insurance, GDPR compliance, GPS tracking and the ULEZ-compliant fleet.
What does an ADR job from Stourbridge cost?
From £50 (ex VAT) at the simplest end, quoted as one fixed price for the whole dedicated job before booking. Final price depends on distance, vehicle, urgency and time - quoted in full upfront before you book.
Class 5 work sits above that floor for identifiable reasons rather than as a surcharge: a temperature requirement changes the vehicle, and the DY7 end of the post town is rural, which lengthens the approach.
| Driver | Effect |
|---|---|
| Distance and return leg | Dominant factor on any dedicated job |
| Temperature control | A control temperature on a 5.2 entry changes the vehicle |
| Separation | Class 5.1 away from combustibles may mean two vehicles for one order |
| Driver certification | The ADR-certificated pool is smaller than the general one |
| Collection district | A rural DY7 pickup takes materially longer to reach than DY8 |
| Out of hours | Evening, overnight and weekend work priced separately |
| Clean-air zones | Birmingham Clean Air Zone and the £12.50 London ULEZ at cost |
See the pricing page and the parent hazardous goods service.
What insurance covers a chemical consignment?
Goods-in-transit cover of £50,000 per consignment, extending to £1,000,000 through partner carriers where the value requires it, with public liability at £1,000,000. Limits, exclusions and the claims route are set out in our terms.
The exclusions are the part worth reading on specialty chemical work: our terms exclude consequential loss and business interruption, so a batch spoiled downstream by a late or damaged consignment is not within this cover. T&C Logistics Ltd is Companies House number 16838210 and holds an Operator's Licence.
How do I book, and what do you need from me?
The full entry, not just the class. For Class 5 especially, send the UN number, proper shipping name, packing group and any control temperature before a vehicle is committed — that is what decides whether the job is routine, needs a refrigerated vehicle, or cannot be carried at all.
- Call 0121 720 3841 for the office or +44 7963 400173 for dispatch. Enquiries are taken around the clock and answered between 06:00 and 22:00, seven days a week.
- Send the UN number and proper shipping name for every entry, with packing group, quantity and any control temperature.
- Confirm the combination packaging matches the packing instruction — we supply no packaging.
- Describe loading at both ends: forklift, tail lift, drum handling, bunded area.
- Accept the fixed price and an ADR-certificated driver from our 3,000-plus vetted driver-partners is assigned.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can you carry organic peroxides from Stourbridge?
- Case by case, and the entry decides. Division 5.2 organic peroxides are thermally unstable: several entries carry a control temperature and an emergency temperature, and some are not permitted for carriage at all under ADR. Send the UN number, proper shipping name and any control temperature and we will tell you whether the job is routine, needs a refrigerated vehicle, or cannot be carried — before any vehicle is committed.
- Can a dangerous-goods load be temperature controlled?
- Yes. We run chilled at 2-8 degrees Celsius, ambient controlled at 15-25, frozen at minus 18 and below, and deep frozen on dry ice, in dedicated vehicles with no shared load. We carry to the figure you specify rather than setting it ourselves. Note the limit of what we hold: for consignments needing full Good Distribution Practice authorisation we coordinate with GDP-certified partner carriers, and T&C Logistics is not an MHRA-licensed wholesale dealer.
- How do you handle reagents bottled in glass?
- As a dangerous-goods package first and a fragile one second, because the two can conflict — ADR requires packages secured against movement, while fragile instincts say cushion and isolate, and bad cushioning is what lets a package shift. A dedicated vehicle carries it with nothing loaded against it. We supply no packaging: the inner receptacles, absorbent and outer package are yours to provide to the packing instruction.
- What has to be on the note for a Class 5 consignment?
- The six standard items — UN number, proper shipping name, class or division, packing group, number and description of packages, and total quantity — plus the control temperature where the entry specifies one. The driver cannot infer a temperature, so it belongs on the document. Classification, packing, marking and the transport document are the consignor's duties, and DVSA enforces this at the roadside.
- Which classes will you not carry?
- Class 1 explosives and Class 7 radioactive material, both of which need licensing T&C Logistics does not hold. We also decline individual Class 5.2 entries that ADR does not permit for carriage — that is the entry's own restriction, not ours. The classes we do carry are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9, with drivers certificated for what is on the vehicle.
- Does a DY7 collection cost more than one in the town?
- Yes, and we say so rather than averaging it out. DY7 reaches Kinver and the Staffordshire border and is rural, so the approach is materially longer than to DY8 in the town or DY9 towards Lye and Hagley. Distance and the return leg remain the largest single factor in the price on any dedicated job, and a rural collection point lengthens both ends of it.
