Bromsgrove holds the only meaningful industrial-gas presence among the ten towns around our Oldbury base: 4 industrial-gas businesses registered to the BROMSGROVE post town, alongside 5 chemical manufacturers, 3 paint and coatings makers and 7 pharmaceutical wholesalers, out of 4,407 active companies. Cylinders are a different job from drums. They are transportable pressure equipment, they have to be secured and their valves protected, the load space needs ventilation, and the one mistake that recurs on a mixed welding-gas collection is putting oxygen next to acetylene - an oxidising gas against a flammable one. The town's position helps on the longer legs: junction 4 of the M5 and junction 1 of the M42 both meet the A38 here, so a southbound ADR run is on the network immediately. We carry classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 with ADR-certificated drivers; classes 1 and 7 we refuse.
Which gas cylinders can you move from Bromsgrove?
Class 2 across its three divisions — flammable gases in 2.1, non-flammable non-toxic gases in 2.2 and toxic gases in 2.3 — carried by drivers holding ADR vocational training certificates for the class. The entries that come up most often locally are welding, medical and process gases.
What decides the job is not the class number but the combination on the order. A single-gas collection is straightforward; a mixed one needs the separation question answered before a vehicle is sent, which is the next section.
| Division | Nature | Typical entry | Carried |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.1 | Flammable gases | UN1001 acetylene dissolved, UN1965 LPG, UN1049 hydrogen compressed | Yes |
| 2.2 | Non-flammable, non-toxic gases | UN1066 nitrogen compressed, UN1013 carbon dioxide | Yes |
| 2.2 oxidising | Non-flammable but oxidising | UN1072 oxygen compressed | Yes, separated from 2.1 |
| 2.3 | Toxic gases | case by case on the entry | Yes, on confirmation |
| Aerosols | Small pressure receptacles | UN1950 aerosols | Yes |
Why can oxygen and acetylene not travel side by side?
Because one feeds what the other starts. Oxygen under UN1072 is non-flammable but strongly oxidising; acetylene under UN1001 is a flammable gas in division 2.1. Put a leak from each in the same confined space and the oxidiser turns a small ignition into a large one.
ADR deals with this through separation requirements between incompatible goods, and the practical effect on a van or a box body is that the two either go with physical separation or they go on two trips. A welding supplier's order is exactly where this arises, because oxygen and acetylene are routinely bought together. We resolve it at quote stage from the UN numbers you send — not at the kerb with the driver deciding whether there is enough room.
What does a cylinder need on the vehicle?
Four things, every time: securing against movement, valve protection, the correct orientation for the entry, and a ventilated load space. A cylinder that rolls is a cylinder whose valve can be struck, and a struck valve on a compressed-gas cylinder is the failure mode that matters.
In practice that means cylinders are carried in a cage or properly restrained rather than wedged, valve guards or caps stay fitted, and the load compartment is ventilated rather than sealed. We will not carry cylinders loose in a sealed van body. If the cylinders come in the supplier's own cage or pallet, say so at booking — it usually makes the job simpler and sometimes changes the vehicle, because a cage has a footprint a loose set does not.
| Requirement | In practice |
|---|---|
| Secured against movement | Cage, rack or restraint — not wedged with other freight |
| Valve protection | Guard or cap fitted and intact |
| Orientation | As the entry requires; many cylinders travel upright |
| Ventilation | Ventilated load space, never a sealed body |
| Separation | Oxidising gases apart from flammable gases |
| Periodic inspection | In date — the cylinder is transportable pressure equipment |
Who is responsible for the cylinder's condition and paperwork?
The consignor. Classification, marking, labelling, the transport document and the condition of the pressure receptacle are the sender's duties under the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations, the Great Britain implementation of ADR. We check what is presented and refuse what does not match.
Cylinders add one check a drum does not: periodic inspection. A cylinder whose test date has lapsed is not fit to be filled or carried, and that is visible on the cylinder itself. DVSA enforces carriage requirements at the roadside. The transport document still needs the standard six items — UN number, proper shipping name, class or division, packing group where one applies, number and description of packages, total quantity — and for gases the number and size of cylinders is the package description.
What else moves out of Bromsgrove under ADR?
Class 3 and Class 8 from the chemical and coatings side, and Class 5.1 occasionally. The counts below come from Companies House records for the BROMSGROVE post town.
| Trade | Firms registered to the post town | Typical entry |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial gases | 4 | UN1001 acetylene, UN1072 oxygen, UN1013 carbon dioxide |
| Chemical manufacturers | 5 | UN1993 flammable liquid n.o.s., Class 8 corrosives |
| Paint and coatings makers | 3 | UN1263 paint, UN1866 resin solution |
| Pharmaceutical wholesalers | 7 | Class 2 medical gases, Class 6.1 entries |
| Specialty chemical and fuel wholesale | 2 | UN1202 gas oil, Class 5.1 oxidisers |
| Manufacturing overall | 219 | mixed Class 3, 8 and 9 |

Are medical gases a different job from industrial ones?
Yes, because a medical gas is two regulated things at once. Medical oxygen travels as UN1072 under ADR exactly like the industrial grade, and it is also a medicinal product — so the transport requirements and the pharmaceutical quality requirements both apply to the same cylinder.
With 7 pharmaceutical wholesalers registered to the Bromsgrove post town, that overlap is live here rather than theoretical. Our position on it is stated rather than blurred: we carry the ADR side on our own driver certification, and where the consignment needs full Good Distribution Practice authorisation the job is coordinated with GDP-certified partner carriers. T&C Logistics is not an MHRA-licensed wholesale dealer. If you are moving medical gas under a quality agreement, tell us which requirements the agreement places on the carrier when you enquire, because that determines whether the job runs on our vehicles or a partner's.
Which vehicle carries a cylinder load?
One with a ventilated load space and room for the cage, which rules a sealed van out before payload is even considered. Cylinders are heavy for their footprint, so weight binds before volume.
| Vehicle | Payload | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Small van | up to 500 kg | a few small cylinders, restrained, ventilated |
| Box van | 1,200-1,500 kg | a supplier cage with a tail lift |
| 7.5-tonne box truck | 2,500-3,000 kg | multiple cages, separated loads, tail lift |
| 18-tonne rigid | 9,000-10,000 kg | bulk cylinder movements between depots |
What does the driver hold, and what do we not claim?
An ADR vocational training certificate covering the classes on the vehicle, Driver CPC, and our Operator's Licence, with a ULEZ-compliant fleet. That is the held list and it is verifiable.
What T&C Logistics does not hold is a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser appointment of its own, and we do not imply one — where a consignment needs DGSA input we work with partners who hold it. The same discipline applies on the pharmaceutical side of this town's trade: we are not an MHRA-licensed wholesale dealer, and consignments needing full Good Distribution Practice authorisation are coordinated with GDP-certified partner carriers. Everything held is published on our licences page.
How does Bromsgrove's motorway position affect an ADR run?
It shortens the risky part. Junction 4 of the M5 is signed for Bromsgrove on the A38 and junction 1 of the M42 meets the same corridor, so a dangerous-goods load spends less time on urban roads before it reaches the motorway than it would from any of the Black Country towns.
That is worth more on ADR work than on general freight, because the exposure on a dangerous-goods movement is concentrated in junctions, queues and tight access rather than in motorway miles. Northbound the position reverses — our base is about 12 miles away, so a Bromsgrove collection for a Black Country delivery carries a genuine approach leg, and we quote it rather than averaging it away.
What does an ADR collection from Bromsgrove cost?
From £50 (ex VAT) at the simplest end, quoted as one fixed price for the whole dedicated job before booking. Final price depends on distance, vehicle, urgency and time - quoted in full upfront before you book.
| Driver | Effect |
|---|---|
| Distance and return leg | Dominant factor on any dedicated job |
| Separation | Oxygen with acetylene on one order can mean two trips |
| Cylinder count and size | Cages and racks have a footprint loose cylinders do not |
| Driver certification | The ADR-certificated pool is smaller than the general one |
| Approach leg | About 12 miles from our base, quoted rather than averaged |
| Out of hours | Evening, overnight and weekend work priced separately |
| Clean-air zones | Birmingham Clean Air Zone and the £12.50 London ULEZ at cost |

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can oxygen and acetylene cylinders go on the same vehicle?
- Only with proper physical separation, and often the answer is two trips. Oxygen under UN1072 is non-flammable but strongly oxidising; acetylene under UN1001 is a flammable gas in division 2.1, and ADR sets separation requirements between incompatible goods. A welding supplier's order routinely contains both, so we settle it from your UN numbers at quote stage rather than leaving the driver to judge the space at the kerb.
- How do you secure cylinders in transit?
- In a cage, rack or proper restraint — never wedged between other freight — with valve guards or caps fitted and intact, in the orientation the entry requires, and in a ventilated load space. We will not carry cylinders loose in a sealed van body. If they arrive in the supplier's own cage or pallet, tell us at booking: it usually simplifies the job and sometimes changes the vehicle, because a cage has a footprint a loose set does not.
- Do you check the cylinder test date?
- Yes. A cylinder is transportable pressure equipment and its periodic inspection date is marked on the cylinder itself; one that has lapsed is not fit to be filled or carried. Condition of the pressure receptacle, along with classification, marking, labelling and the transport document, is the consignor's responsibility, and we check what is presented before loading rather than afterwards.
- Which ADR classes do you refuse?
- Class 1 explosives and Class 7 radioactive material. Both require licensing T&C Logistics does not hold, so they are declined rather than sub-contracted on quietly. We carry classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9, with drivers holding ADR vocational training certificates for the classes on the vehicle. Division 2.3 toxic gases are confirmed against the specific entry before a vehicle is committed.
- Is Bromsgrove quicker for a southbound dangerous-goods run?
- Usually, and it matters more here than on general freight. Junction 4 of the M5 is signed for Bromsgrove on the A38 and junction 1 of the M42 meets the same corridor, so the load spends less time in junctions, queues and tight access — which is where exposure on a dangerous-goods movement is concentrated — before reaching the motorway. Northbound the 12-mile approach from our base applies and is quoted.
- Do you have a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser?
- Not in-house, and we do not imply one. T&C Logistics holds driver-level ADR vocational training certificates, Driver CPC, an Operator's Licence, goods-in-transit and public liability insurance and a ULEZ-compliant fleet. Where DGSA input is required we work with partners who hold that appointment. The same applies to pharmaceutical work in this town: we are not an MHRA-licensed wholesale dealer and use GDP-certified partner carriers where full authorisation is needed.
