Ice is the one delivery where the clock and the thermometer are the same instrument. A pallet loaded at −20°C and delivered warm is not late — it is partly water, and the bags have fused into a block the bar cannot use.

What temperature does ice need?

At or below −18°C, the same band as frozen food, and for a specific reason: ice held just below freezing sublimates and refreezes, which fuses individual cubes into a solid block.

Why is door opening the real risk?

Because a multi-drop round opens the vehicle repeatedly, and ice is the least forgiving product on any chilled round. Warm air entering at every stop is what starts the fusing.

The controls are practical: load in delivery sequence, keep openings short, and let the unit recover between drops rather than stacking them back to back on a hot day.

Summer is when it bites, and summer is also peak demand. A round that works in November with twelve stops may need eight in July, which is a planning decision rather than something a driver can fix on the day.

Who buys ice and when?

Bars, restaurants, festivals, fishmongers, caterers and healthcare — with demand driven far more by weather and events than by any calendar.

Hot weather is the sharp variable. A heatwave doubles bar demand within a day, and every producer in a region is simultaneously short, which makes agreed capacity worth far more than a good rate.

Events are the other spike, and they are at least predictable. A festival or a race meeting takes pallets of ice on a fixed build-up schedule, and missing that window means missing the event entirely. See our exhibition and events logistics service.

How is ice for fish different?

Flake ice for fish is a working material rather than a product for a drink, and it is used in far larger quantities. A fishmonger's counter and a market stall both consume ice continuously through a trading day.

Timing matters more than volume there. Fish counters are dressed before opening, so ice has to arrive before the fish does, which puts it into the same pre-dawn window as the seafood itself.

Is dry ice handled differently?

Entirely differently, and it is worth separating in a customer's mind. Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide at around −78°C, and it does not melt — it sublimates directly to gas.

That makes it a classified consignment: UN1845, Class 9, with ventilation requirements because sublimating CO₂ displaces oxygen in an enclosed space. It is not a cold pack that happens to be colder.

Can you deliver to venues and events?

Yes, and event ice is a distinct job. A festival bar operation takes pallets at a specified time to a specified compound, with no storage capacity beyond its own freezers.

Repeat delivery through an event is the normal pattern rather than one drop. A three-day festival cannot store three days of ice, so it takes daily deliveries against a schedule set by the organiser's vehicle access windows.

Ground and access are the practical constraints, exactly as they are for equestrian shows. A loaded vehicle on a wet field is a problem for everyone, and event ice arrives when the site says it can.

Does packaging survive the journey?

It has to, and it is more fragile than it looks. Ice bags are thin polythene and they tear on sharp pallet edges or under weight, and a torn bag is a bag a venue will not accept.

Stacking is the specific risk. Bags at the bottom of a high pallet compress, and compression plus any temperature rise produces exactly the fused block the trade complains about.

Wet cardboard is the other failure. Ice pallets are sometimes shipped with cardboard interlayers, and any melt at all softens them and collapses the stack.

How much ice does a venue actually use?

Far more than people estimate. A busy bar gets through hundreds of kilograms on a warm weekend evening, and a festival bar operation works in tonnes rather than bags.

A standard bag is around 10 to 20 kilograms depending on the producer, so a modest pub order of twenty bags is 200 to 400 kilograms — which is a pallet, not a boot load.

Underestimating is the commonest planning failure and it happens at exactly the wrong moment. A venue that runs out on the hottest evening of the year cannot buy ice locally, because every other venue has already tried.

Do you deliver to healthcare and industrial users?

Yes, and they are the least visible part of the trade. Ice is used in laboratories, in food production cooling, in first aid and in certain industrial processes.

These customers frequently need a consistent supply rather than a peak one, which makes them the steady base underneath a highly seasonal hospitality business.

Requirements differ too. A production or laboratory user may specify ice made from potable water to a stated standard, which is the producer's specification to meet rather than the carrier's — but it makes contamination in transit a serious matter.

What does a venue need for storage?

A freezer at −18°C, and the honest answer is that many do not have enough of one. A bar with a single under-counter freezer cannot hold a pallet.

That is why ice is delivered frequently rather than in bulk, and why storage capacity rather than consumption sets the delivery pattern. A venue takes what it can hold, which may be twice a week.

Where a venue genuinely cannot store, the answer is delivery timed to the trading session rather than to a convenient morning. Ice delivered at four in the afternoon for an evening service is used before it can fuse.

Is ice quality affected by the journey?

Only by temperature, but temperature affects it more than any other product we carry. Ice that has partly melted and refrozen is cloudy, fused and visibly different from fresh ice.

Premium and gourmet ice is the sharpest case. Clear-cube ice is made slowly and deliberately for cocktail service, and any partial melt clouds it — which removes the entire reason a bar paid extra for it.

That makes the cold chain a product-quality matter rather than a food safety one for most of the trade. The ice is safe; it simply is not what the customer bought.

What happens in a heatwave?

Everything at once. Demand rises across every venue in a region on the same afternoon, producers run at capacity, and transport becomes the binding constraint rather than production.

It is also the period when the product is hardest to protect. Ambient temperatures above 30°C mean every door opening costs more, vehicles work harder to hold temperature, and rounds have to shorten.

The only workable answer is capacity agreed before the weather arrives. A supplier with vehicles reserved through summer serves its customers in the week that matters; one calling on the day does not.
