Why do hops need cold chain?
Because their bittering and aroma compounds degrade with temperature and time. Alpha acids break down in warmth, and a hop that has warmed in transit produces a beer that does not match its recipe.
Hop merchants store pellets cold and vacuum-packed for exactly this reason, and a cold-stored hop holds its character far longer than one kept at ambient. The transport leg is the weak point in an otherwise controlled chain.
Aroma hops are the most sensitive and the most expensive, which makes the loss commercial as well as technical. A brewery paying a premium for a specific aroma variety is paying for compounds that warmth removes.
Is yeast really a live delivery?
Yes. Liquid yeast is a live culture with a viable cell count, and viability falls with warmth and with time from propagation.
That makes it the tightest item in the order. A brewery pitching yeast with reduced viability gets a slow or stuck fermentation, and a stuck fermentation is a lost batch measured in thousands of litres rather than in the price of the yeast.
Practically it travels chilled and it travels fast, and it should not be the item that sits in a vehicle overnight because the malt on the same order was not urgent. Splitting an order by urgency is frequently cheaper than holding all of it to the tightest item.
How heavy is a malt order?
Heavier than a small brewery expects. Malt comes in 25 kilogram sacks and a modest brew length uses several hundred kilograms, so a single brew's grain bill is close to half a tonne.
Larger breweries take totes of 500 to 1,000 kilograms, which need mechanical handling at both ends. Small breweries in arches and industrial units frequently have neither a dock nor a forklift.

What about cleaning chemicals and gas?
They are the classified part of a brewery's supply. Caustic-based cleaners and acid sanitisers are corrosive, and dispense gas and cellar CO₂ are Class 2.
Breweries buy both routinely and rarely think of them as dangerous goods, which is the same pattern as antifouling in a chandlery or perfume in a cosmetics order.

Do you serve homebrew and retail as well as trade?
Yes, and homebrew wholesale behaves like any small-drop retail trade: independent shops taking modest quantities, plus a substantial direct-to-consumer parcel flow.
The chilled question follows the product rather than the channel. Liquid yeast sold to a home brewer needs the same cold chain as yeast sold to a brewery, and a warm parcel is a dead culture either way.

Can you handle spent grain and returns?
Spent grain usually goes to farms locally rather than through a carrier, and that arrangement works well without us. What we do handle is the packaging return flow.
Kegs, casks and returnable containers are a real two-way flow with genuine asset value. A brewery's casks are capital, and a cask that does not come back is a cost rather than a nuisance.

Do you deliver to arch and railway-unit breweries?
Frequently, because a large share of UK independent brewing operates from railway arches and small industrial units. Neither was built to receive pallets.
An arch typically has one roller door onto a service road, no dock, no forklift and limited turning space. A pallet of malt has to come off the vehicle by tail lift and be moved by pump truck over an uneven surface.
Establishing that once for a brewery is what stops it becoming a problem every time. A vehicle sized for the access beats a larger one that cannot reach the door.
How far ahead should ingredients arrive?
Malt can arrive days ahead and hops and yeast should not. Malt in a sealed sack in a dry store keeps well; liquid yeast starts losing viability from the moment it leaves cold storage.
The practical rule most breweries settle on is malt on a routine cycle and yeast as close to brew day as the schedule allows — frequently the day before rather than the week before.
That splits a single order into two deliveries with different urgencies, which sounds more expensive and usually is not. One chilled run protecting the item that can lose a whole batch is cheap by comparison.
Do you handle contract and gypsy brewing movements?
Yes, and they generate a lot of transport. A brand brewing on someone else's kit sends its own ingredients to a host brewery and takes finished beer away again.
Timing is tighter than for an owned brewery because the host's tank time is booked. Ingredients that miss the slot mean the brand loses the brew date and the host loses the vessel time.

What about small-batch and speciality ingredients?
They are a growing part of the trade and frequently the most fragile. Fruit purees, speciality malts, wood chips, adjuncts and specific yeast strains all move in small quantities with specific requirements.
Fruit purees are the awkward line: heavy, sometimes chilled or frozen, and packaged in aseptic bags that puncture if handled roughly. A split puree bag contaminates a load and loses an expensive ingredient.
Speciality yeast strains are the other. A single vial or pouch of a specific strain may be the entire basis of a planned beer, which makes a small chilled item disproportionately important to protect.
What about taprooms and brewery retail?
Most independent breweries now run a taproom or shop, which adds a retail supply flow on top of the production one — glassware, packaging, merchandise and dispense equipment.
Dispense gas is the classified line here. Cellar CO₂ and mixed gas cylinders are Class 2, and a taproom gets through them steadily rather than occasionally.
Packaging is the volume line. Cans, bottles, crowns, cardboard and labels arrive by the pallet and are almost pure volume, which puts a brewery's packaging order in the same category as any packaging delivery.
