A gas cylinder is refillable transportable pressure equipment, which makes it a different consignment from an aerosol: it carries a periodic inspection date on the cylinder itself, it is usually rented from the gas supplier rather than owned, and an empty one is still dangerous goods under the same entry. T&C Logistics carries ADR Class 2 across divisions 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 with ADR-certificated drivers, in a ventilated load space with valves protected and cylinders secured upright. Oxygen under UN1072 is kept separate from flammable gases such as UN1001 acetylene.

Three things about a gas cylinder catch senders out, and none of them is the gas. The first is that a cylinder is refillable pressure equipment with a periodic inspection date stamped on it - one whose test has lapsed is not fit to be filled or carried, and that is visible on the cylinder rather than buried in paperwork. The second is that an empty cylinder is not an empty package: an uncleaned cylinder travels under the entry of whatever it held, so a returns leg is a dangerous goods movement in its own right. The third is ownership - most cylinders belong to the gas supplier and are on rental, which affects where they can legitimately go. T&C Logistics carries ADR Class 2 with certificated drivers, in a ventilated load space, cylinders secured upright with valves protected, and oxidising gases kept apart from flammable ones.

Which cylinders can you carry?

Class 2 across its three divisions — flammable gases in 2.1, non-flammable non-toxic gases in 2.2, and toxic gases in 2.3, the last confirmed against the specific entry before a vehicle is committed. We do not carry Class 1 explosives or Class 7 radioactive material.

What decides the job is not the division on its own but the combination on the order, because that is what sets the separation requirement. A single-gas collection is straightforward; a mixed welding order usually is not.

Why must oxygen and acetylene be kept apart?

Because one feeds what the other starts. Oxygen under UN1072 is non-flammable but strongly oxidising; acetylene under UN1001 is a flammable gas. A leak from each in the same confined space turns a small ignition into a large one.

ADR handles this through separation requirements between incompatible goods, and on a van or box body the practical effect is that the two either travel with proper physical separation or they go on two trips. A welding supplier's order routinely contains both, so we settle it from your UN numbers at quote stage — not at the kerb with the driver judging whether there is enough room. Tell us if oxygen and a flammable gas are on the same order and you will be told one vehicle or two before you commit.

What has to be true of the cylinder itself?

Four things, every time. The periodic inspection date must be in date, the valve protection must be fitted and intact, the cylinder must be secured so it cannot move, and the load space must be ventilated rather than sealed.

The test date is the one most often missed, and it is the sender's responsibility along with classification, marking and the transport document. A cylinder that rolls is a cylinder whose valve can be struck, and a struck valve on a compressed-gas cylinder is the failure mode that matters — which is why we will not carry cylinders loose in a sealed van body under any circumstances. If the cylinders come in the supplier's own cage or pallet, say so: it usually simplifies the job and sometimes changes the vehicle, because a cage has a footprint a loose set does not.

Is an empty cylinder still a dangerous goods consignment?

Yes, unless it has been properly purged and certified clean — and in practice almost none are. An uncleaned empty travels under the entry of whatever it held, with the same labelling, the same documentation and the same separation rules as a full one.

That matters because returns are most of the cylinder traffic. A gas supplier's cycle is full out, empty back, and the back leg is as regulated as the front. So a returns run is quoted and documented as a dangerous goods movement, not as a van collecting scrap. If a cylinder genuinely has been purged and certified, send the certificate with it, because without it the driver has to treat it as charged.

Whose cylinder is it, and does that matter?

It usually matters more than senders expect. Most industrial cylinders are not owned but rented from the gas supplier, and the rental agreement generally specifies where they may be returned and who may hold them.

So before booking a movement to a new site or a third party, check that the agreement allows it. We will carry the cylinder wherever you instruct, but we cannot resolve a rental dispute afterwards, and a cylinder delivered to an address the supplier will not collect from becomes a standing charge. Where the movement is a straightforward return to the supplier's own depot, say so and give the depot's goods-in procedure — most have one specifically for cylinders.

What vehicle does a cylinder load need?

A ventilated one with room for the cage, which rules out a sealed van before payload is even considered. Cylinders are heavy for their footprint, so weight binds before volume.

What goes on the transport document?

Six items, all yours as consignor: the UN number, the proper shipping name, the class or division, the packing group where one applies, the number and description of packages, and the total quantity. For gases the package description is the number and size of cylinders.

Carriage follows the ADR agreement, applied in Great Britain through the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations, with DVSA enforcing at the roadside. We check the load against the declaration before loading and decline a mismatch — including a cylinder count that does not match, because on a cylinder load the count is the control.

Are medical gases a different job?

Yes, because a medical gas is two regulated things at once. Medical oxygen travels as UN1072 under ADR exactly like the industrial grade, and it is also a medicinal product, so the transport requirements and the pharmaceutical quality requirements both apply to the same cylinder.

Our position is stated rather than blurred: we carry the ADR side on our own driver certification, and where a consignment needs full Good Distribution Practice authorisation the job is coordinated with GDP-certified partner carriers. T&C Logistics is not an MHRA-licensed wholesale dealer. If you are moving medical gas under a quality agreement, tell us what the agreement requires of a carrier when you enquire — that determines whether the job runs on our vehicles or a partner's. See pharmaceutical courier.

Can you deliver cylinders to a site or a cellar?

Yes, and the destination is usually harder than the load. A cylinder has to be taken off the vehicle, moved to where it is used and left secured upright — which on a construction site means unmade ground and on a pub cellar means a drop or a lift.

Three things settle it at booking: who meets the driver, how the cylinder gets from the vehicle to its position, and whether there is a securing point there. A cylinder stood unsecured against a wall is not a completed delivery, so if there is no chain, rack or cage at the far end, say so and we will tell you whether the drop can be made. For a cellar delivery the question is the hatch and the lowering arrangement, and that is a plan rather than an improvisation — a driver will not manhandle a liquefied gas cylinder down a cellar drop without one.

What does a cylinder movement cost?

From £50 (ex VAT) for the smallest dedicated job, quoted as one fixed price before you book. Final price depends on distance, vehicle, urgency and time - quoted in full upfront before you book.

What moves the price

Distance and return legDominant factor; a full-out, empty-back cycle prices as two legs
SeparationOxygen with acetylene on one order can mean two trips

Driver certificationADR-certificated drivers are a smaller pool
Tail liftNeeded for a cage where no forklift is free
Out of hoursEvening, overnight and weekend work priced separately
Clean-air zonesBirmingham Clean Air Zone and the £12.50 London ULEZ at cost

What insurance and credentials apply, and how do I book?

Goods-in-transit cover of £50,000 per consignment, extending to £1,000,000 through partner carriers where the value requires it, plus public liability of £1,000,000. Limits and exclusions are in our terms.

Held: ADR vocational training certificates at driver level, Driver CPC, an Operator's Licence, GDPR compliance, Environment Agency upper tier waste registration CBDU654368 and a ULEZ-compliant fleet. Not held: we have no Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser appointment of our own and no MHRA wholesale dealer authorisation, and we claim neither. T&C Logistics Ltd is Companies House number 16838210; the list is on our licences page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can oxygen and acetylene cylinders travel together?
Only with proper physical separation, and often the answer is two trips. Oxygen under UN1072 is non-flammable but strongly oxidising while acetylene under UN1001 is flammable, and ADR sets separation requirements between incompatible goods. A welding supplier's order routinely contains both, so we settle it from your UN numbers at quote stage rather than leaving the driver to judge the space at the kerb.
Is an empty cylinder still dangerous goods?
Yes, unless it has been properly purged and certified clean, and in practice almost none are. An uncleaned empty travels under the entry of whatever it held, with the same labelling, documentation and separation rules as a full one — so a returns leg is a dangerous goods movement, not a van collecting scrap. If a cylinder genuinely has been purged, send the certificate with it.
What happens if a cylinder is out of test?
Yes. A cylinder is transportable pressure equipment and its periodic inspection date is stamped on the cylinder itself; one that has lapsed is not fit to be filled or carried. Condition of the pressure receptacle, along with classification, marking and the transport document, is the consignor's responsibility — we check what is presented before loading rather than afterwards, and decline what does not match.
How are cylinders secured in transit?
In a cage, rack or proper restraint, never wedged between other freight, with valve guards or caps fitted and intact, upright for acetylene and all liquefied gases, in a ventilated load space. We will not carry cylinders loose in a sealed van body under any circumstances. If they arrive in the supplier's own cage, tell us — it usually simplifies the job and sometimes changes the vehicle.
Does it matter that the cylinders are rented?
It usually matters more than senders expect. Most industrial cylinders are rented from the gas supplier, and the rental agreement generally specifies where they may be returned and who may hold them. Check the agreement allows the movement before booking: we will carry wherever you instruct, but a cylinder delivered to an address the supplier will not collect from becomes a standing charge.
Can you carry medical gas cylinders?
Yes on the ADR side — medical oxygen travels as UN1072 exactly like the industrial grade. But it is also a medicinal product, so pharmaceutical quality requirements apply to the same cylinder. T&C Logistics is not an MHRA-licensed wholesale dealer; where full Good Distribution Practice authorisation is required the job is coordinated with GDP-certified partner carriers. Tell us what your quality agreement requires of a carrier.
Will a parcel courier take a gas cylinder?
No. Parcel networks decline dangerous goods as a class, and a cylinder needs a ventilated load space, restraint, valve protection and in many cases separation from other gases on the same vehicle — none of which a network round provides. A dedicated vehicle with an ADR-certificated driver is the only realistic route, priced as one fixed job rather than a surcharge structure.
