T&C Logistics moves fire extinguishers for fire safety companies, servicing providers and distributors across the UK. The characteristic movement is a swap: serviced or new units out to a site, time-expired units back to the workshop, on the same visit. Extinguishers are pressure vessels and CO2 units are compressed gas, so they travel secured upright with valves protected.

Fire Extinguisher Transport pricing — from £50 (ex VAT)

Fire extinguisher servicing runs on an annual cycle that never stops. Every unit in the country has a date on it, and a servicing company's year is a rolling programme of visits where units come off a wall, go to a workshop, and something has to be on that wall meanwhile because the site cannot legally be left without cover.

T&C Logistics moves extinguishers for fire safety and servicing companies, distributors and multi-site facilities managers. Companies House records nearly 2,500 active UK companies in fire protection and fire safety. We have run specialist transport since 2020 with over 2,400 deliveries completed and more than 3,000 vetted driver-partners nationwide. Quotes from £50 (ex VAT), quoted in full upfront before you book.

Why is a swap the standard movement?

Because a building cannot be left without extinguishers while its own are being serviced. The practical answer across the trade is exchange: serviced units go on, time-expired units come off, and the site's cover is never interrupted.

That makes almost every job a two-way movement rather than a delivery, and it changes the vehicle plan — the load out and the load back are similar in size, so the vehicle is full in both directions. Booking it as a delivery with a separate collection doubles the movements for no benefit.

It also changes what the driver needs to know: which units go where, and which come back. On a multi-site round that is a list rather than an address, and getting it wrong means a site with the wrong classification of extinguisher on the wall.

Are extinguishers dangerous goods?

It depends on the type. Extinguishers are pressure vessels, and CO2 units contain liquefied carbon dioxide under pressure, which is a classified gas for transport purposes.

In practice much extinguisher movement falls within provisions that keep it manageable, but the position is not the same for every unit and it is not something to assume. Water, foam and powder extinguishers are pressurised but are treated differently from CO2, and quantity matters as it does everywhere in dangerous goods.

Our drivers hold ADR certification, which T&C Logistics holds directly rather than through partners, so a load that genuinely needs classifying can be carried correctly. Tell us the types and quantities and the rest follows. See our ADR Class 2 courier service and hazardous goods service.

How are extinguishers secured in a vehicle?

Upright, restrained, with valves protected and nothing loose. A cylinder rolling in a load space is both a damage risk and a genuine safety one.

TypeTypical weightTransport note
Water / foam 6 L9-11 kgUpright; strapped in rows
Water / foam 9 L13-16 kgUpright; heavier at the base
Powder 6 kg9-11 kgUpright; powder settles if laid over
Powder 9 kg13-15 kgSame
CO2 2 kg6-8 kgClassified gas; valve protected
CO2 5 kg13-16 kgSame; horn is the vulnerable part
Wheeled unit 50 kg+60-100 kgTwo-person; wheels chocked

A vehicle of extinguishers fills on floor area rather than payload, since they must stand rather than stack.

Can you run multi-site servicing rounds?

Yes, and multi-site is where this work makes sense. A facilities manager with forty sites, or a servicing company covering a region, generates a rolling programme rather than individual jobs.

The economics are decisive: one vehicle covering eight sites with swaps in both directions costs a fraction of eight separate visits, and the servicing company's engineers stay on servicing rather than driving. That is the real saving — an engineer's day spent transporting is a day not spent on billable work.

What makes rounds work is the site list with access hours, a contact per site, and clarity about which units go where. Provide it once and it is built into the route rather than reconstructed each cycle.

What about site access and occupied buildings?

Most extinguisher work happens in occupied buildings, which means access hours, reception sign-in and sometimes escorted access to plant rooms and stairwells.

Schools want holidays or after hours. Care homes and hospitals want quiet periods and controlled routes. Offices in managed buildings want a booked goods lift. Industrial sites want an induction. None of this is difficult, but all of it takes time that has to be in the plan rather than discovered.

Vehicles are ULEZ-compliant for central London sites and GPS-tracked so a servicing company can see the round progressing. Where out-of-hours access is required, our network works evenings and weekends as standard.

Do you deliver new stock as well as servicing swaps?

Yes. Distributors supply servicing companies and end users with new units, brackets, signage and consumables, and that is straightforward scheduled distribution rather than a swap.

New stock is boxed and stacks better than loose serviced units, so a stock delivery fits a vehicle more efficiently than a swap round. Where a servicing company is stocking up ahead of a busy period, a bulk delivery is much cheaper per unit than adding stock to swap rounds.

Ancillaries matter more than they look: brackets, stands, signage and identification labels are what turn a delivered extinguisher into a compliant installation, and they are the items most often forgotten in an order. See our pallet delivery service for bulk stock movements.

What happens to units at end of life?

They go to the servicing company's workshop or an appropriate facility for discharge and disposal — never into a general waste stream while still pressurised.

A time-expired extinguisher is still a pressure vessel, and discharging and dismantling it is workshop work rather than something that happens on a round. Powder, foam and CO2 each have their own handling once discharged, and the empty cylinder is scrap metal with value.

Where genuine waste arises, T&C Logistics holds Environment Agency upper tier registration CBDU654368 as a waste carrier, broker and dealer, so the disposal leg can be carried lawfully with a waste transfer note. What we do not do is discharge, dismantle or treat — that stays with the competent workshop.

Does the servicing standard affect transport?

Only indirectly, but it shapes the calendar. Extinguisher servicing in the UK follows a recognised standard covering annual basic service, extended service and discharge testing at defined intervals, and that is what generates the workshop returns.

The practical consequence for transport is predictability: a servicing company knows a year ahead roughly how many units come back for extended service, and the movements can be planned rather than reacted to. Companies that plan their transport against that calendar spend materially less than those booking per job.

The standard applies to the competent person doing the servicing, not to the carrier. We move the units; the servicing, certification and record-keeping stay with the fire safety company.

Can you handle a site with a mixed extinguisher estate?

Yes, and mixed estates are the norm. A single building typically carries water, foam, powder and CO2 units of different sizes, each with its own service date, and a swap round has to put the right classification back in the right place.

Getting that wrong is not a delivery error, it is a fire safety one — a CO2 unit where a foam unit should be leaves the risk uncovered. That is why extinguisher rounds run to a schedule listing units by location rather than a count by site.

Practically, we work to the servicing company's schedule and record what was delivered and collected against it. The competent person's assessment of what each location needs stays with the fire safety company. See our tool hire delivery for a comparable exchange-round model.

Do you deliver to facilities management contracts?

Yes, and FM contracts are where multi-site extinguisher work concentrates. A facilities provider covering hundreds of buildings for a single client generates a rolling programme that no single servicing engineer can drive.

The characteristic constraint is access diversity: the same contract may include offices, schools, depots and retail units, each with different hours, sign-in procedures and key arrangements. A round that works on paper fails on the third site where nobody has a key.

Give us the site list with access arrangements once and it is built into the route. Where an FM provider adds or drops sites during a contract, the round is adjusted rather than rebuilt. See our WEEE collection service for related site work.

What does fire extinguisher transport cost?

Priced per round for multi-site work and per job for single movements, quoted upfront, with fuel and goods-in-transit insurance included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is extinguisher work always a swap?
Because a building cannot be left without cover while its own units are serviced. The trade answer is exchange: serviced units go on, time-expired units come off, on the same visit. That makes almost every job two-way, so the vehicle is full in both directions — booking it as a delivery plus a separate collection doubles the movements for no benefit.
Are fire extinguishers classified as dangerous goods?
It depends on the type. Extinguishers are pressure vessels, and CO2 units contain liquefied carbon dioxide under pressure, which is a classified gas. Water, foam and powder units are pressurised but treated differently, and quantity matters as it does everywhere in dangerous goods. Our drivers hold ADR directly, so a load needing classification can be carried correctly.
How are extinguishers carried safely?
Upright, restrained in rows, with valves protected and nothing loose — a cylinder rolling in a load space is both a damage and a safety risk. Powder settles if a unit is laid over, and the horn on a CO2 unit is its most vulnerable part. A vehicle of extinguishers fills on floor area rather than payload, since they must stand rather than stack.
Can you run a multi-site servicing round?
Yes, and it is where this work makes sense. One vehicle covering eight sites with swaps both ways costs a fraction of eight visits, and the servicing company's engineers stay on servicing rather than driving — an engineer's day spent transporting is a day not billed. Provide the site list with access hours and a contact per site and it is built into the route.
Do you discharge or dispose of old extinguishers?
No. A time-expired extinguisher is still a pressure vessel, and discharging and dismantling it is workshop work for a competent person rather than something done on a round. Where genuine waste arises we hold Environment Agency upper tier registration CBDU654368 so the disposal leg can be carried lawfully with a transfer note — but we do not treat.
Can you deliver new stock in bulk?
Yes, and it is more efficient than adding stock to swap rounds. New units are boxed and stack, so a bulk delivery fits a vehicle far better than loose serviced units and costs much less per unit. Do not forget the ancillaries — brackets, stands, signage and identification labels are what turn a delivered extinguisher into a compliant installation, and they are most often left off the order.
Does the servicing standard affect how you transport them?
Only indirectly, but it shapes the calendar. UK servicing follows a recognised standard with annual basic service and extended service or discharge testing at defined intervals, which is what generates workshop returns. That makes volumes predictable a year ahead, so movements can be planned rather than reacted to. The standard applies to the competent person servicing, not to the carrier.
