T&C Logistics delivers and collects hire equipment for tool and equipment hire companies across the UK. Hire economics run on utilisation, so the off-hire collection matters as much as the delivery — equipment sitting on a finished site is stock that is not earning. Petrol and diesel equipment must be drained or at minimum level, and our drivers hold ADR where fuel genuinely needs carrying.

Tool Hire Delivery & Collection pricing — from £50 (ex VAT)

One fixed price per dedicated job, quoted in full upfront before you book — fuel and goods-in-transit insurance included, no hidden fees. Final price depends on distance, vehicle, urgency and time of day.

A hire company makes money when equipment is out and earning, and loses it in the gaps — the day between a job finishing and the collection happening, the item sitting behind a site hut for a week because nobody booked the return.

T&C Logistics moves hire equipment for tool and equipment hire companies, builders merchants with hire desks, and contractors managing their own fleets. Companies House records over 2,600 active UK companies in tool, equipment and plant hire. We have run specialist transport since 2020 with over 2,400 deliveries completed and more than 3,000 vetted driver-partners nationwide. Quotes from £50 (ex VAT), quoted in full upfront before you book.

Why does the collection matter as much as the delivery?

Because utilisation is the whole business model. An item on hire earns; the same item on a finished site earns nothing and is not available for the next customer either.

The delivery gets attention because a customer is waiting for it. The collection does not, because nobody is — which is exactly why it slips. A hire desk that treats off-hire as a scheduled movement rather than a chore recovers days of utilisation across a fleet without buying anything.

Practically that means booking collections as routes rather than individually. Where several items come off hire in the same area within a few days, one routed run costs a fraction of separate visits and gets everything back sooner. The same logic every hire sector eventually discovers.

What equipment moves this way?

Breakers and drills, cut-off saws and floor saws, compactors and wackers, generators and lighting, pumps, heaters and dryers, access towers and podiums, and the consumables that go with them.

What has to happen to fuel before collection?

Petrol and diesel equipment should be drained or at minimum level before it travels. Fuel in a machine's own tank is treated differently from fuel as cargo, but a full tank in a van is still a spill and fire risk.

The recurring problem is the return leg: equipment comes off a site with whatever fuel is left in it, and nobody drains it because the customer has gone. That is a real and common issue rather than a theoretical one, and it is worth agreeing at hire rather than at collection.

Where fuel genuinely needs carrying — jerry cans, a top-up for a generator — that is a classified load. Our drivers hold ADR certification, which T&C Logistics holds directly rather than through partners, so it can be carried correctly rather than informally in the back of a van. See our hazardous goods service.

Who is responsible for the equipment's condition?

The hire company. Inspection, maintenance, PAT testing and any statutory examination stay with the owner — transport does not touch them and does not satisfy them.

This matters because hire equipment carries duties. Work equipment provided for use at work falls under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, and lifting accessories carry thorough examination requirements under LOLER 1998. Those belong to whoever supplies the equipment for use.

What we contribute is a record of the movement: what was delivered or collected, when, from where, against your own contract or asset references. That is what a hire desk needs to reconcile, and it settles the question of when an item actually came back.

Can you deliver to a live construction site?

Yes, and site rules govern. Access is through the main contractor's gate with an induction, a permit and PPE requirements, and the driver reports to a site office rather than a goods-in desk.

Site hours are frequently earlier than commercial hours — a crew starting at seven needs the breaker before seven, not in a nine-to-five window. And the person who ordered the equipment is usually out on the site rather than at the gate, so a named contact with a working mobile is worth more than an address.

Collections have the added complication that the site may have finished. An item behind a locked hoarding on a completed site needs someone with access, and arranging that after the vehicle arrives is the most common wasted journey in hire logistics. See our construction industry hub.

Do you handle inter-depot transfers?

Yes, and depot balancing is a recurring movement. Equipment concentrates where the last job was rather than where the next demand is, and moving it back is schedulable rather than urgent.

That makes transfers considerably cheaper than the site deliveries that get the attention. A hire company that plans balancing weekly rather than reacting to shortages spends less on transport and has better availability — which is the argument in every hire sector and is routinely ignored in all of them.

Transfers also suit larger vehicles: a load of equipment moving between two depots fills a Luton or a 7.5-tonne efficiently, where a single site delivery does not. Combining both patterns into one arrangement is where the pricing improves.

What about damaged and off-hire equipment?

It comes back as it is, and the record matters. Hire equipment returns damaged more often than it leaves damaged, and the argument about when it happened is easier with photographs than with recollection.

Our practice is to record the collection against your reference and to flag obvious damage rather than silently loading it. That is not an inspection — the hire desk inspects — but a note that an item came off site with a broken guard is worth having before the customer disputes it.

Equipment that is genuinely at end of life and being scrapped is a different movement. Powered equipment falls under the WEEE Regulations 2013, and we hold Environment Agency upper tier registration CBDU654368 to carry it lawfully. See our WEEE collection service.

How quickly can equipment reach a site?

Same-day within a region where a vehicle is available. Hire is a substitution market — a customer who cannot get a breaker today calls the next hire desk in the list, and the hire is lost rather than delayed.

That makes response time a commercial issue rather than a service one. Hire companies that tell us their depot locations and typical delivery geography in advance get a faster answer than those calling cold, which is the same pattern as every urgent sector we serve.

Where a delivery is genuinely time-critical — a crew standing on site — our same-day courier and time-critical delivery services cover dedicated running with the vehicle allocated to your job alone.

Can you deliver equipment straight to a domestic customer?

Yes, and domestic hire is a growing part of the trade. A homeowner hiring a floor sander or a wallpaper stripper wants it delivered rather than fitting it into a car, and the hire desk gains a customer who would otherwise not hire at all.

The practical differences from a site delivery are access and instruction. There is no forklift, no compound and no trained operator — the item goes into a hallway or a garage, and a heavy machine on a domestic doorstep is a two-person job rather than a one-person one.

Collection is the harder half again: a domestic customer finishing on Sunday evening wants the item gone on Monday, and the item is usually in the way until it is. Routed domestic collections work far better than individual ones.

What about consumables and accessories?

They travel with the equipment and they are what stops the job when they are missing. A breaker without points, a saw without a blade or a sander without abrasives is a machine the customer cannot use.

The recurring failure is that consumables are picked separately from the machine and get separated in transit or at the counter. They should travel in the same consignment, boxed and counted against the hire docket rather than loose in a load.

Consumables are also frequently the profitable part of a hire, so a missing blade is a lost sale as well as a stopped job. Where a hire desk sends them separately, that is worth reconsidering — a second delivery costs more than the consumables usually do.

What does tool hire delivery cost?

Priced per movement, or per route on a standing arrangement, quoted upfront with fuel and goods-in-transit insurance included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does off-hire collection matter so much?
Because utilisation is the business model. An item on hire earns; the same item on a finished site earns nothing and is not available for the next customer. Deliveries get attention because a customer is waiting; collections slip because nobody is. A hire desk that books collections as routes rather than individually recovers days of utilisation across a fleet without buying anything.
Does equipment need draining before collection?
Petrol and diesel equipment should be drained or at minimum level. Fuel in a machine's own tank is treated differently from fuel as cargo, but a full tank in a van is still a spill and fire risk. The recurring problem is the return leg — equipment comes off site with whatever is left in it and the customer has gone. Agree it at hire, not at collection.
Can you carry fuel cans with the equipment?
Yes, but as a classified load rather than informally. Jerry cans or a generator top-up are dangerous goods for road transport, and our drivers hold ADR certification directly rather than through partners. That is the difference between carrying it correctly and carrying it in the back of a van and hoping — which is what happens more often than the trade admits.
Who is responsible for PAT testing and inspection?
The hire company. Inspection, maintenance, PAT testing and statutory examination stay with the owner — transport neither touches nor satisfies them. Work equipment provided for use at work falls under PUWER 1998, and lifting accessories carry thorough examination requirements under LOLER 1998. What we provide is a record of the movement against your contract references.
What if the site has finished and is locked?
That is the most common wasted journey in hire logistics. An item behind a locked hoarding on a completed site needs someone with access, and arranging that after the vehicle arrives costs the visit. Establish the access arrangement when the off-hire is booked — a name, a number and a way in — rather than assuming the site will still be open.
Do you move equipment between depots?
Yes, and it is schedulable rather than urgent, which makes it considerably cheaper than site deliveries. Equipment concentrates where the last job was rather than where demand is next. A hire company that plans balancing weekly rather than reacting to shortages spends less and has better availability — the argument in every hire sector and routinely ignored in all of them.
How fast can you get equipment to a site?
Same-day within a region where a vehicle is available, and speed here is commercial rather than cosmetic. Hire is a substitution market: a customer who cannot get a breaker today calls the next hire desk, and the hire is lost rather than delayed. Companies that give us their depot locations and delivery geography in advance get a faster answer than those calling cold.
