T&C Logistics delivers for steel stockholders and metal suppliers across the UK. Steel is dense enough that a small load reaches payload quickly, and long enough that length rather than weight often decides the vehicle. The material's mill certificate has to travel with it, because unidentified steel is unusable in certified fabrication.

Steel Stockholder Delivery pricing — from £50 (ex VAT)

One fixed price per dedicated job, quoted in full upfront before you book — fuel and goods-in-transit insurance included, no hidden fees. Final price depends on distance, vehicle, urgency and time of day.

A bundle of steel bar that a driver can barely see in the back of a vehicle can be its entire payload. Steel is roughly eight times the density of water, which makes it the one distribution trade where underestimating weight is genuinely dangerous rather than merely expensive.

T&C Logistics delivers for steel stockholders, metal suppliers and service centres. Companies House records over 570 active UK companies in steel stockholding and supply. We have run specialist transport since 2020 with more than 3,000 vetted driver-partners nationwide. Quotes from £50 (ex VAT), quoted in full upfront before you book.

What makes steel loads different?

Density and length, working against each other. Steel is about 7,850 kilograms per cubic metre, so a load that occupies very little floor space can exhaust a vehicle's payload entirely.

ProductTypical formConstraint
Round and flat bar3-6 m bundlesLength and density together
Box and tube section6-7.5 mLength dominates
Beam and columnUp to 12 m+Outside van work entirely
Sheet and plate2,500 × 1,250 mm typicalVery heavy per sheet
Angle and channel6 mAwkward to secure
Cut-to-length piecesAnyMade to order; certificate attached

Mesh and rebarBundlesDense; sharp ends

Long section beyond six metres is where van work ends and specialist haulage begins. We say that rather than take a booking we cannot serve — a 12-metre beam is not a courier job. See our flatbed truck page.

Why does the mill certificate matter?

Because steel without documentation cannot be used in certified fabrication. A mill certificate records the material's grade, cast number and mechanical properties, and a fabricator working to a structural standard needs it for the material to be traceable.

The practical consequence is that certificates travel with the material rather than being posted separately. A delivery that arrives without its paperwork is material a fabricator cannot put into a certified job, however correct the steel itself is.

Cast identification also means material should not be mixed or substituted in transit. A bundle relabelled or split without its identification becomes unidentified steel, which is a downgrade rather than an inconvenience.

How is steel secured in transit?

Properly and to the load rather than around it, because a shifting steel load is a serious safety matter rather than a damage risk.

Long dense bundles carry substantial momentum, and inadequate restraint on a bundle of bar is the failure mode that injures people. The DVSA's load securing guidance is explicit that restraint must be sufficient for the load's weight in every direction, and steel is where that bites hardest.

Practically that means the right restraint rated for the weight, loaded low and against a headboard, with sharp-edged material protected so straps are not cut by the load they are holding.

Who takes stockholder deliveries?

Fabricators, engineering shops, welders, agricultural repairers and site contractors — mostly small businesses with a workshop and a crane or forklift, occasionally without.

The offload question decides the job. A workshop with an overhead crane takes a bundle in minutes; one without has a real problem with a 500-kilogram bundle of bar, and that has to be known before the vehicle is chosen.

Site delivery is harder again. A construction site takes steel where the work is, which may be through a compound and across ground a loaded vehicle should assess first. See our construction industry hub.

Why are cut-to-length orders urgent?

Because a fabricator ordering a specific length is usually mid-job. Stockholders cut to order from stock bar, and the cut piece exists for one fabrication rather than for a shelf.

The pattern is identical to plastics and made-to-measure trades: low material value, high consequence, and a delivery whose timing is set by a workshop schedule rather than by a replenishment cycle.

Cut pieces also need their certification attached individually. A cut length separated from its cast identification is unidentified material, which defeats the purpose of buying certified steel.

Does surface finish matter?

For stainless and aluminium, considerably. Structural steel arrives with mill scale and is expected to be marked; polished or brushed stainless is a finished surface that scratches and contaminates.

Cross-contamination is the specific issue. Stainless steel that contacts carbon steel picks up iron particles that rust on the stainless surface later, which is why stainless fabrication shops keep separate tooling and storage.

In transport terms that means stainless travels separated from carbon steel rather than bundled with it, and on protection rather than directly on a bed that has carried mild steel. Getting that wrong produces rust spots on stainless weeks after delivery.

Do you collect scrap and offcuts?

Yes. Fabrication generates offcut and swarf volume continuously, and segregated metal is a valuable material rather than waste.

Segregation is what determines the value. Separated grades — mild steel, stainless, aluminium, brass — have distinct markets, while a mixed skip is worth a fraction of the same weight sorted.

T&C Logistics holds Environment Agency upper tier registration CBDU654368 as a waste carrier, broker and dealer, so the collection leg is carried lawfully with a waste transfer note. Note that scrap metal dealing is licensed separately under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, and we transport rather than trade. See our WEEE collection service.

Can you run scheduled stockholder rounds?

Yes, and rounds suit stockholding well. Fabricators order regularly, stockholders serve a regional customer base, and a routed round is far cheaper per drop than individual deliveries.

The mix is the challenge: a round carrying bar for one customer, sheet for another and a cut-to-length piece for a third has to be loaded so each comes off without disturbing the rest, and with weight distributed correctly throughout.

That is a loading discipline rather than a vehicle question, and it is the difference between a round that runs and one where the third drop requires unloading the first two. See our welding consumables delivery service.

Can you deliver where there is no forklift or crane?

Sometimes, and it has to be established before the vehicle is chosen rather than discovered on site. Steel is the trade where an unplanned manual offload is most likely to become unsafe.

The practical thresholds are straightforward: a single 6-metre length of light box section is a two-person carry, while a strapped bundle of bar at 300 kilograms or more is not a manual handling proposition at all under any circumstances.

The options where no lifting equipment exists are a vehicle with a tail lift, splitting a bundle into manageable lengths at the stockholder, or a crane-equipped vehicle. All three cost something; discovering the problem on arrival costs more.

Do you carry aluminium and non-ferrous metals?

Yes, and they need separating from steel for the same contamination reason stainless does. Aluminium in contact with carbon steel in the presence of moisture sets up galvanic corrosion, which shows as pitting on the aluminium.

Aluminium is also roughly a third the density of steel at about 2,700 kilograms per cubic metre, which changes the load arithmetic completely — an aluminium order fills space long before it reaches the payload that an equivalent steel order would.

Anodised and mill-finish aluminium are finished surfaces that mark, so they travel protected rather than bundled bare. Brass and copper are more valuable per kilogram and are treated as such.

What about galvanising and finishing collections?

They are a two-way flow rather than a delivery. Fabricated steelwork goes out to a galvaniser or powder coater and comes back finished, which means the same items travel twice with different handling each way.

The return leg is the careful one. Hot-dip galvanised work comes back with a coating that protects the steel and can be damaged by chains, sharp strapping or dragging — and a scratch through galvanising is a corrosion site for the life of the component.

Timing matters because finishing sits in the middle of a fabrication programme. A delayed collection from a galvaniser holds up a fabrication shop that has nothing else to do with that job.

Galvanisers also work to their own bath schedule rather than to a customer's, so the ready-time is set by the finisher. Booking a collection against a firm ready-time rather than an expected one avoids a wasted journey.

What does steel stockholder delivery cost?

A rate per drop on a routed round, or one fixed price for a dedicated job, quoted upfront with fuel and goods-in-transit insurance included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a small steel load fill a vehicle's payload?
Because steel is about 7,850 kilograms per cubic metre — roughly eight times the density of water. A load occupying very little floor space can exhaust a vehicle's payload entirely, which makes steel the one distribution trade where underestimating weight is genuinely dangerous rather than merely expensive.
Why must the mill certificate travel with the steel?
Because steel without documentation cannot be used in certified fabrication. A mill certificate records grade, cast number and mechanical properties, and a fabricator working to a structural standard needs it for traceability. Material arriving without its paperwork cannot go into a certified job however correct the steel itself is.
How long a section can you carry?
Up to around six metres on a flatbed. Beyond that — beams, columns and long structural section to twelve metres and more — is specialist haulage rather than van or flatbed work, and we say so rather than take a booking we cannot serve. A 12-metre beam is not a courier job.
How is a steel load restrained?
With restraint rated for the actual weight, loaded low and against a headboard, and sharp-edged material protected so straps are not cut by the load holding them. DVSA guidance requires restraint sufficient for the load's weight in every direction, and long dense bundles carry substantial momentum — this is a safety matter rather than a damage one.
Can stainless travel with mild steel?
It should not. Stainless that contacts carbon steel picks up iron particles that rust on the stainless surface later, which is why stainless shops keep separate tooling and storage. In transport that means stainless travels separated and on protection rather than directly on a bed that has carried mild steel — otherwise rust spots appear weeks after delivery.
Why are cut-to-length pieces urgent?
Because a fabricator ordering a specific length is usually mid-job — the cut piece exists for one fabrication rather than for a shelf, so its delivery is set by a workshop schedule. Cut pieces also need their cast identification attached individually; a length separated from it becomes unidentified material, defeating the purpose of buying certified steel.
Can you collect scrap and offcuts?
Yes, and segregation determines the value — mild steel, stainless, aluminium and brass have distinct markets, while a mixed skip is worth a fraction of the same weight sorted. We hold Environment Agency registration CBDU654368 and issue a transfer note. Scrap metal dealing is separately licensed under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013; we transport rather than trade.
