Acrylic arrives with a protective film on both faces, and the whole job is keeping it there until the fabricator takes it off. A sheet slid across another sheet, or laid on a van floor with a stone on it, is scrap — and it is scrap at full sheet price rather than at the value of the mark.

What size are the sheets?
Larger than most vans. The common stock sizes are 3,050 × 2,030 mm and 2,440 × 1,220 mm, and the larger of those will not fit in a standard panel van at all.

How is the surface protected?
By never letting one sheet move against another. The masking film manufacturers apply protects against handling marks, not against a loaded sheet sliding across a stack for two hundred miles.
Sheets travel interleaved or separated, flat and fully supported, with nothing loose in the vehicle that can move onto them. A single stone or offcut sliding under a stack marks every sheet above it.
The masking film also has to stay on. A fabricator peels it after cutting, and a sheet delivered with the film half torn off has lost its protection for the rest of its journey through the workshop.
Should sheets travel flat or on edge?
Flat and supported for most sheet materials, which is the opposite of glass. Plastic sheet is flexible rather than brittle, and a large sheet stood on edge in a moving vehicle flexes and can crease or crack.
The comparison is worth being precise about, because it is a common assumption that all sheet goods travel like glass. Glass is rigid and fails in bending, so it goes on edge; acrylic is flexible and its risk is surface damage and permanent deformation, so it goes flat.
Thin foam PVC is the clearest case — it dents and creases under its own weight if unsupported, and it needs a full-length flat bed rather than partial support at each end.
Why do cut-to-size orders change the job?
Because they are made to order and there is no replacement on a shelf. A stockholder cutting a piece to a fabricator's dimensions has produced a one-off, and a damaged piece restarts the cutting and the lead time.
Cut orders are also usually urgent by the time they ship. The fabricator ordered a specific size because they need it for a job in progress, which means the delivery is against a workshop schedule rather than a stock replenishment.
This is the same economics as made-to-measure blinds and sealed units: low goods value, high consequence, and handling care proportional to the consequence rather than the invoice.
Does static cause problems?
Yes, and it is a genuine nuisance rather than a hazard for most of this trade. Plastic sheet builds static readily, which attracts dust and swarf to exactly the surfaces that need to stay clean.
The practical control is a clean vehicle. A van that has carried timber, plaster or aggregate and has not been swept properly will transfer that dust onto plastic sheet through static alone, without anything touching.
For electronics-related work, static is a technical requirement rather than a cleanliness one — antistatic grades exist precisely because ordinary plastic near sensitive components is a problem. Those are handled to the customer's specification.
Who buys from a plastics stockholder?
Fabricators, sign makers, engineering shops, shopfitters, laboratories and increasingly point-of-sale and display makers. Almost all are small businesses in units rather than large receiving operations.
That defines the delivery: a workshop with a roller door, no forklift and one or two people to help, taking sheets that are physically bigger than the doorway is comfortable with.

Can you handle recycling and offcuts?
Yes. Fabrication generates substantial offcut volume, and clean single-polymer offcuts are a recyclable material rather than waste — acrylic and polycarbonate both have recovery routes when kept segregated.
Segregation is what decides whether it has value. A mixed skip of acrylic, PVC and polycarbonate with adhesive residue is waste; separated clean offcuts by polymer are a material with a market.

Do you run stockholder rounds?
Yes, and scheduled rounds suit this trade well. Fabricators order regularly against jobs, and a stockholder serving a cluster of workshops in a region has a natural route.
Rounds also solve the two-person problem economically. A dedicated two-person delivery to one workshop is expensive; the same crew covering eight workshops in a day is not.

Do you deliver to sign makers and display companies?
Yes, and they are among the largest buyers of sheet plastic. Sign makers take acrylic and foam PVC continuously, cut it, print on it and mount it, which makes surface condition the whole point of the delivery.
Print work is the least forgiving application. A sheet destined to be direct-printed shows every handling mark, because the print sits on the surface rather than covering it, and there is no fabrication step that removes a scratch.
Sign makers also work to installation dates set by clients rather than by their own schedule, which makes their material deliveries as date-driven as the made-to-measure trades. A sheet arriving late is a signage installation that moves.
How is polycarbonate roofing handled?
By length and by protecting the UV-stabilised face, which is a specific technical requirement rather than a cosmetic one.
Twinwall and multiwall polycarbonate sheet has one face treated to resist ultraviolet degradation, marked by the manufacturer's film, and fitting it the wrong way up shortens the sheet's life substantially. That film must survive transport for the installer to know which face is which.
Length is the other half: multiwall sheets run to seven metres and are extremely light, which makes them a wind problem rather than a weight one. An unsecured sheet in an open vehicle is a hazard to other road users.
What about laser-cut and CNC parts?
They are made-to-order components rather than material, and they travel accordingly — boxed, separated and with their identification attached.
A batch of laser-cut acrylic parts represents machine time rather than sheet value, and a damaged batch costs the cutting slot as well as the material. Parts nested from one sheet also arrive as a set that needs to stay together.
Edge quality matters here in a way it does not for stock sheet. Laser-cut acrylic has a flame-polished edge that is part of the finished appearance, and parts allowed to rub against each other in transit lose it.
Small parts also go missing more easily than sheets. A nested batch of thirty components delivered as twenty-eight is a batch that has to be recut, so parts are counted at handover rather than assumed from a box.
