Commercial laundry equipment is the heaviest thing most premises will ever have delivered through a normal doorway. A mid-size washer-extractor weighs more than a small car concentrated into a footprint under a metre square, and it has to cross a floor that was not necessarily designed with that in mind.
T&C Logistics moves laundry equipment for distributors, launderette operators, hotels, care homes, gyms and on-premises laundries - single replacements, full launderette fit-outs, and clearances when a site closes. We have run specialist transport since 2020 with over 2,400 deliveries completed and more than 3,000 vetted driver-partners nationwide. Goods-in-transit cover is £50,000 per consignment on our vehicles, extending to £1,000,000 through partners. Quotes start from £50 (ex VAT), quoted in full upfront before you book.
What laundry equipment does T&C Logistics move?
Washer-extractors, tumble dryers, flatwork ironers and calenders, finishing tables and the ancillary equipment around them - dosing systems, trolleys and stacking kits. The weight range is wider than in any other equipment class we handle.
Published specifications place a 10 kg-capacity washer-extractor at roughly 200-300 kg, a 18 kg machine at 350-500 kg, and a 25 kg machine at 600-900 kg depending on whether it is a soft-mount or hard-mount design. Hard-mount machines are heavier because they need mass to resist spin forces; soft-mount machines use suspension instead and can be freestanding. Tumble dryers are lighter for their size, typically 100-250 kg, but far bulkier.
| Machine | Typical weight | Planning note | Usual vehicle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washer-extractor 8-10 kg | 200-300 kg | Fits most doorways | Luton with tail lift |
| Washer-extractor 14-18 kg | 350-500 kg | Check floor loading | Luton or 7.5-tonne |
| Washer-extractor 25-35 kg | 600-900 kg | Often needs skates and a survey | 7.5-tonne with tail lift |
| Tumble dryer 10-15 kg | 100-180 kg | Bulky; light for its size | Luton with tail lift |
| Tumble dryer 25-35 kg | 200-350 kg | Tall; watch door heights | Luton or 7.5-tonne |
| Flatwork ironer 1.6-2.0 m | 250-600 kg | Long, rigid, awkward to turn | 7.5-tonne |
| Stack washer-dryer | 250-400 kg | Top-heavy; may separate | Luton with tail lift |
Vehicle selection normally means our Luton van with tail lift or a 7.5-tonne truck for the larger machines.
What are transit bolts and why do they matter?
Transit bolts are shipping restraints that lock a washing machine's drum assembly to its frame. Without them, the suspension takes the shock of the journey and can be permanently damaged.
Manufacturers fit transit bolts to new machines and instruct that they be removed before the first wash. The corollary is that a used machine being relocated should have them refitted before it moves, and on a soft-mount commercial washer this is not optional - the drum is suspended on springs and dampers designed for controlled spin loads, not for road shock with a free-swinging drum.
Original transit bolts are frequently lost within days of installation. If yours are missing, the manufacturer or dealer can usually supply a set, and it is worth ordering them before the move rather than after. Where a machine must move without transit bolts, tell us: it changes how the machine is restrained in the vehicle and how the route is driven, and it is a known risk you should be aware of rather than discover later.
What has to happen before we collect?
Water off, machine drained, hoses disconnected, power isolated and gas disconnected by a Gas Safe registered engineer where applicable. A commercial washer holds enough residual water to flood a vehicle floor.
Drainage is the step most often skipped. A washer-extractor retains water in the sump, the pump and the hoses after its last cycle, and that water finds its way out as soon as the machine tilts onto a skate. Tumble dryers are simpler but gas-heated models must be disconnected by an engineer registered with Gas Safe Register for that appliance class - commercial catering and laundry appliances sit in different competence categories from domestic gas work.
Electrical disconnection needs a competent electrician: most commercial machines are three-phase and hard-wired rather than plugged in. We transport and position the machine; we do not connect water, waste, gas or electricity at either end. Stating that boundary clearly at quote stage prevents a wasted visit.
Will the floor take the machine?
That is a question for the building, not the carrier, and it is worth asking before delivery day. A 900 kg machine on a footprint under one square metre imposes a point load that some suspended floors are not designed for.
Ground-floor concrete slabs are rarely an issue. Suspended timber floors, upper storeys and older basements can be. Manufacturers publish static and dynamic floor loading figures for each model, and dynamic loading during spin is considerably higher than static weight - a hard-mount machine transmits substantial force into the floor at extraction speed, which is precisely why hard-mount machines are normally bolted to a concrete base.
Our responsibility is getting the machine to its position safely. Whether the floor is suitable is a matter for your installer or a structural engineer, and the manufacturer's installation manual states the requirement. Raise it early: it is much cheaper to discover a floor problem before a 900 kg machine is on a vehicle than after.
Can you handle a launderette fit-out or a full site clearance?
Yes. Launderette work is characteristically all-at-once - a bank of eight to sixteen machines going in over a day or two, or coming out on a lease-end date.
Fit-outs need sequencing against the plumbing and electrical programme: machines cannot be positioned until the services are in the right place, and once a bank of washers is in position the ones behind cannot be reached. Clearances have the opposite problem - everything must come out, usually through one doorway, in an order that keeps the route clear.
A 7.5-tonne vehicle running planned loads is normally faster and cheaper than repeated van trips for this volume. We work evenings and weekends where a site is trading around the works, and vehicles are ULEZ-compliant for London. For hotel and care-home laundry rooms, access is usually via a goods lift, in which case we need its capacity in kilograms.
What happens to old laundry machines?
They become waste electrical and electronic equipment on collection. T&C Logistics is registered with the Environment Agency as an upper tier waste carrier, broker and dealer under registration number CBDU654368.
Commercial washers and dryers fall under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013. They are large household appliance-category equipment in weight terms and are processed for metals recovery, with the motor, drum and frame accounting for most of the mass. Machines with a resale life - and commercial laundry equipment often has one, since a well-maintained washer-extractor can run for many years - are better routed to a dealer or auction than to treatment.
We carry to a partner-operated permitted treatment facility; we do not treat or recycle equipment ourselves, and documentation is issued by the processor that performed the work. See our WEEE collection service and auction house collections.
What if the machine is bolted to the floor?
It has to be released before we arrive, and that is your engineer's or your contractor's work. Hard-mount washer-extractors are bolted to a concrete plinth or slab precisely because of the forces they generate at extraction speed.
The fixing is not incidental. A hard-mount machine relies on the mass of the building to absorb spin loads, so the anchor bolts are structural rather than locating. Releasing them can involve cutting corroded fixings, and on older installations the plinth itself may need breaking out. That is building work, not transport, and it needs to be finished before a vehicle is sent.
Soft-mount machines are usually free-standing on levelling feet, which is one reason they dominate newer installations - they are far easier to relocate. When booking, tell us which type you have and whether the machine will be free on the floor when we arrive. A vehicle that arrives to find a machine still anchored has made a wasted journey, and that cost lands somewhere.
How long does a laundry equipment move take on site?
Longer than most equipment of similar value, and the time is spent on the route rather than the lift. A single machine typically occupies a crew for a substantial part of a working day once access is accounted for.
The reason is weight combined with confinement. Laundry rooms in hotels, care homes and gyms are usually small, often below ground or on an upper floor, and reached by a corridor with at least one turn. Moving a 500 kg machine along that route on skates is slow deliberate work, and it cannot safely be rushed. A bank of machines in a launderette, by contrast, is comparatively quick per unit because the access is a shopfront.
Plan on that basis rather than on distance. A ten-mile move into a basement laundry room can take longer than a two-hundred-mile move into a ground-floor unit, and pricing that reflects access rather than mileage is the honest way to quote it.
What does commercial laundry transport cost?
One fixed price per dedicated job, quoted upfront, fuel and goods-in-transit insurance included. Laundry equipment is never consolidated onto a shared parcel network.
| Cost driver | Effect |
|---|---|
| Machine weight | The dominant factor; sets vehicle and crew |
| Number of machines | Bank installations load efficiently per unit |
| Access route | Steps, lifts, thresholds, carry distance |
| Crew size | Two minimum; heavy machines need three or more |
| Distance and return leg | Dedicated vehicle time both ways |
| Timing | Evening and weekend windows for trading sites |
| Waiting | Engineer attendance, lift bookings, inductions |
| Disposal | Treatment gate fees where applicable |
From £50 (ex VAT). Final price depends on distance, vehicle, urgency and time - quoted in full upfront before you book. Related: catering equipment transport and commercial refrigeration transport. Call 0121 720 3841 or use our contact page.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need transit bolts to move a commercial washing machine?
- On a soft-mount washer-extractor, yes. Transit bolts lock the suspended drum assembly to the frame so road shock is not taken by the springs and dampers, which are designed for controlled spin loads rather than a free-swinging drum. Original bolts are usually lost soon after installation; the manufacturer or dealer can supply a replacement set. Order them before the move, and tell us if a machine has to travel without them.
- How heavy is a commercial washer-extractor?
- It varies far more than most equipment. Published specifications put a 10 kg-capacity machine at roughly 200-300 kg, an 18 kg machine at 350-500 kg, and a 25-35 kg machine at 600-900 kg. Hard-mount designs are heavier than soft-mount because they use mass to resist spin forces rather than suspension. Give us the model number and we can confirm the figure before quoting.
- Do you disconnect the water, gas and electricity?
- No. Most commercial machines are three-phase and hard-wired rather than plugged in, so electrical disconnection needs a competent electrician. Gas-heated dryers must be disconnected by an engineer registered with Gas Safe Register for that appliance class. Water and waste connections need a plumber. We transport and position the machine; connection at both ends stays with your engineers.
- Will my floor take a commercial washing machine?
- Ground-floor concrete slabs rarely present a problem; suspended timber floors, upper storeys and older basements sometimes do. A 900 kg machine on a footprint under one square metre is a significant point load, and dynamic loading during extraction is higher than static weight. Manufacturers publish floor loading figures in the installation manual. This is a question for your installer or a structural engineer, and it is much cheaper to ask before delivery day.
- Can you fit out a whole launderette?
- Yes. A bank of eight to sixteen machines is normally delivered over a day or two, sequenced against the plumbing and electrical programme - machines cannot be positioned until services are in place, and once a row of washers is set the ones behind cannot be reached. A 7.5-tonne vehicle running planned loads is usually faster and cheaper than repeated van trips at this volume.
- Can you take old laundry machines away?
- Yes. Commercial washers and dryers fall under the WEEE Regulations 2013 and become waste on collection, so they must be carried by a registered carrier - we hold Environment Agency upper tier registration CBDU654368. We carry to a partner-operated permitted treatment facility, which issues the documentation. Machines with resale life, which well-maintained commercial equipment often has, are better routed to a dealer or auction instead.
- What do you need to know to quote a laundry equipment move?
- Machine make, model and capacity in kilograms, whether transit bolts are available, who is disconnecting and when, the access route at both ends including the narrowest doorway and any steps, and the capacity of any goods lift in kilograms. For upper-floor or basement laundry rooms in hotels and care homes the lift is usually the deciding constraint, so its rating matters more than the doorway.
