T&C Logistics transports commercial refrigeration for installers, equipment dealers, caterers and retailers across the UK. Multideck displays, upright cabinets, blast chillers, ice machines and coldroom panels travel upright on tail-lift vehicles with two-person handling to protect the compressor circuit. We transport and position; refrigerant work stays with an F-Gas qualified engineer. Old units can be removed under Environment Agency registration CBDU654368.

Commercial Refrigeration Transport pricing — from £50 (ex VAT)

Commercial refrigeration is awkward in a very specific way: it is heavy, it is tall, it has a glass front, and it contains a sealed compressor that punishes careless handling weeks after the event. A multideck display that was laid flat in a van on Tuesday can fail on the following Monday, and by then nobody connects the two.

T&C Logistics moves refrigeration equipment for installers, dealers, refurbishers, caterers and retailers - single replacements, shop refits, and collections of end-of-life cabinets. We have run specialist transport since 2020 with over 2,400 deliveries completed, a network of more than 3,000 vetted driver-partners, and goods-in-transit cover of £50,000 rising to £1,000,000 through partners. Quotes start from £50 (ex VAT), with the final price depending on distance, vehicle, urgency and time, quoted in full upfront.

Which refrigeration units does T&C Logistics transport?

Everything that fits a tail-lift vehicle: multideck displays, upright and undercounter cabinets, serve-over counters, blast chillers, ice machines, bottle coolers and flat-packed coldroom panels. Remote condensing units travel alongside the cabinet they serve.

Weight is the first planning question, and published specifications cluster into predictable bands. A 1.25 m multideck display typically weighs 250-350 kg; a double-door upright fridge typically 150-220 kg; a serve-over counter typically 200-400 kg depending on length and glass; a blast chiller typically 150-300 kg. Coldroom panels are individually light but bulky, and a single coldroom shipment often needs more floor area than a single cabinet weighing four times as much.

Why must refrigeration equipment travel upright?

To keep compressor lubricant in the compressor. Tilting a sealed refrigeration circuit past roughly 45 degrees lets oil run into the discharge line, and running the compressor afterwards can cause it to seize.

This is why refrigeration is not a general haulage job. Manufacturers routinely specify that a unit which has been laid down or heavily tilted must stand upright for a settling period before power-up - commonly two to twenty-four hours depending on the model, and stated in the installation manual. A unit that is switched on early may run apparently normally and fail weeks later, which makes the damage almost impossible to attribute after the fact.

Our drivers move refrigeration upright and strapped to the vehicle wall on every job, and we record the orientation the unit travelled in. If your installer needs to know whether a settling period applies, that record answers it. We also strap doors shut: an unsecured glass door on a multideck is the second most common damage cause after tilting.

What is the difference between transporting a unit and doing F-Gas work?

Transport moves a sealed, intact machine. F-Gas work opens the refrigerant circuit, and that requires an engineer holding a City & Guilds 2079 or equivalent F-Gas category qualification. We do the first; we never do the second.

Under the Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases Regulations 2015, recovery, charging and leak testing of fluorinated refrigerants may only be carried out by qualified personnel working for an F-Gas certified company. Moving a sealed unit whose circuit has not been opened is not regulated work. This distinction matters commercially, because it defines where our responsibility ends and your engineer's begins.

Hydrocarbon refrigerants change the picture again. R290 propane and R600a isobutane are increasingly common in new commercial cabinets, and they are flammable. A sealed unit is safe to transport, but tell us which refrigerant it uses if the unit is damaged, leaking or going for disposal - it affects both handling and the treatment route. Our hazardous goods service and ADR-certified drivers cover work where a classified load is genuinely involved.

How do you get a 500 kg multideck into a shop?

Tail lift to the ground, appliance skates across the floor, two handlers minimum, and a route surveyed before the unit comes off the vehicle. A 2.5 m multideck is a two-point lift and cannot be walked on a corner like a fridge.

The practical obstacles in retail and catering premises are consistent: narrow shop doorways, a step at the threshold, a cellar with only stair access, and delivery bays that a 7.5-tonne vehicle cannot enter. In shopping centres there is usually a booked delivery slot and a service lift with a posted capacity, which needs checking against unit weight plus handlers.

Tell us at quote stage the narrowest point on the route, whether there are steps, and the lift capacity in kilograms if one is involved. Where the unit must go down to a cellar or up a floor, that is a specialist lift needing stair skates and additional crew. Our two-man delivery vehicle is the standard configuration and our 7.5-tonne truck handles the larger displays.

Can you support a shop refit or a full site changeover?

Yes, and refits are where sequencing matters most. Old cabinets must come out before new ones go in, usually overnight, and the vehicle plan has to accommodate both directions on the same visit.

A convenience store refit typically means stripping several multidecks and an ice machine, removing them from site, and delivering replacements before trading resumes. That is a two-way job on a fixed clock. We work overnight and weekend windows for exactly this reason, and vehicles are ULEZ-compliant for central London sites.

Where old equipment is being scrapped rather than resold, it becomes waste on collection, and the collection has to be made by a registered carrier - see the next section. For larger retail programmes see our retail industry hub and shopfitting delivery service.

How is end-of-life refrigeration handled?

As WEEE with a refrigerant complication. T&C Logistics is registered with the Environment Agency as an upper tier waste carrier, broker and dealer under registration number CBDU654368, so we can lawfully carry it.

Commercial refrigeration falls under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013. Because the units contain refrigerant gases, they also fall under the Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases Regulations 2015, and the refrigerant must be recovered by a qualified engineer before the cabinet is processed. Older cabinets may still contain R404A or R134a; units built before the phase-out may contain ozone-depleting substances regulated separately, which changes the treatment route entirely.

We carry the equipment to a partner-operated permitted treatment facility. We do not treat or recycle refrigeration ourselves, and any recycling or destruction documentation is issued by the processor that performed the work. See our WEEE collection service for how the chain of custody is evidenced.

What record do you provide of the move?

Collection and delivery times, addresses, the vehicle used, GPS tracking data for the journey, and the orientation the unit travelled in. That last item is specific to refrigeration and it matters.

The reason is the settling period. If a unit has been tilted in transit, the installer needs to know before applying power, and a verbal assurance three days later is not a record. Documenting that a unit travelled upright, or that it was tilted and when, gives your engineer a defensible basis for deciding whether to wait. It also protects both parties if a compressor fails weeks later and the cause is disputed.

For dealers and installers running volume, we can report per consignment against your own job references rather than ours, which saves reconciling two numbering systems. Every vehicle carries GPS tracking throughout, drivers hold Driver CPC, and T&C Logistics Ltd is registered in England and Wales, company number 16838210, operating under an Operator's Licence.

Does an integral or remote unit change the transport job?

Yes, substantially. An integral cabinet carries its own compressor and condenser on board; a remote cabinet has no compressor at all and is fed by a separate condensing unit elsewhere in the building.

That changes three things. A remote cabinet is considerably lighter for its size because the heaviest component is absent, so vehicle choice and crew size differ. It has no sealed compressor circuit on board, so the upright-transport rule that governs integral units does not apply in the same way. And the condensing unit itself is a separate consignment - often roof-mounted at the origin, which makes its removal a specialist job rather than a lift.

Tell us which you have when booking. A supermarket refit moving twenty remote multidecks and four condensing units is a different vehicle plan from the same number of integral cabinets, and the difference is large enough to change the quote.

What does refrigeration transport cost?

One fixed price per dedicated job, quoted upfront, with fuel and goods-in-transit insurance included. Refrigeration is never put on a shared parcel network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a commercial fridge be transported lying down?
It should not be. Tilting a sealed refrigeration circuit past roughly 45 degrees allows compressor lubricant to migrate into the discharge line, and running the compressor afterwards can cause it to seize. We transport refrigeration upright and strapped to the vehicle wall. Where a unit has unavoidably been tilted, manufacturers typically specify a settling period of two to twenty-four hours upright before power-up, stated in the installation manual.
Do you carry out F-Gas work or recover refrigerant?
No. Under the Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases Regulations 2015, opening a refrigerant circuit requires an engineer holding an F-Gas category qualification working for a certified company. We transport sealed, intact units, which is not regulated work. Recovery, charging and leak testing stay with your own F-Gas qualified engineer. For disposal collections, the refrigerant must be recovered before the cabinet is processed at the treatment facility.
Can you remove old refrigeration cabinets during a shop refit?
Yes, and two-way refit jobs are common. Old cabinets come out and replacements go in on the same visit, usually overnight so trading is not interrupted. Because scrapped equipment becomes waste on collection, we carry it under our Environment Agency upper tier registration CBDU654368 to a partner-operated permitted treatment facility. Tell us at quote stage whether units are being resold or scrapped - the routes differ.
What information do you need to quote a refrigeration move?
Unit make and model or approximate weight and dimensions, the refrigerant type if known, the narrowest doorway at both ends, whether there are steps or a cellar, and the capacity of any goods lift in kilograms. Also the access window at each site. A 2.5 m multideck weighing up to 600 kg is a two-point lift with different crew requirements from a 150 kg undercounter cabinet.
Is R290 propane refrigerant safe to transport?
A sealed, intact unit charged with R290 is safe to transport as ordinary freight. R290 propane and R600a isobutane are flammable hydrocarbons now common in new commercial cabinets, but the charge is small and contained. It matters if the unit is damaged, leaking, or going for disposal, because handling and the treatment route both change. Tell us the refrigerant when booking a disposal collection.
Do you deliver coldroom panels?
Yes. Flat-packed coldroom panels are individually light at roughly 15-40 kg each but bulky, so a coldroom shipment usually needs more vehicle floor area than a much heavier single cabinet. The critical handling point is edge protection - a crushed panel edge ruins the seal and the panel is scrap. Panels travel on edge, strapped and separated, normally on a Luton or 7.5-tonne vehicle.
Can you deliver into a shopping centre with a booked delivery slot?
Yes. Shopping centre and retail park deliveries normally require a pre-booked service yard slot and use of a goods lift with a posted capacity. Give us the slot time, the lift capacity in kilograms and any induction requirement when you book. Waiting time at controlled service yards is a real cost driver, so an accurate slot is worth more than an optimistic one.
